How to Listen - Are You Really Listening?
By Steve Hefferon | Published  04/3/2009

You know... your children are only young once. Okay. So you know and you’ve probably heard that a million times, but have you stopped long enough to spend time with your children and really listen to them?

It is estimated that most people only hear 20% of what is being said to them. How many times has your child tried to tell you something and you interrupted with some important information like, "You really need a haircut" or "Have you finished your homework?" or "Have you cleaned your room?"

Admit it. It’s true. If you think you fit into this category, here are some tips to help you be a better listener and get to know your child. It’s good to know how to listen.

  • You can’t listen unless your mouth is shut. Blunt but true.
  • Pay attention to what they are saying. Don’t be thinking about what you’re going to say next.
  • Listening is more than politely waiting for your turn to speak.

Once you’ve mastered this, here are some questions to ask your child that will spark conversations and help you truly get to know him.

If you had three wishes, what would you wish for?

What is your favorite food?

What is your favorite restaurant?

What is your favorite color? Why?

What is your pet peeve?

What is your favorite book?

What is your favorite movie?

What is your favorite video game?

What is your favorite subject in school?

Who is your favorite teacher? Why?

What you like most about our family?

What do you like least about our family?

What do you want to be when you grow up?

Who is your best friend in the whole world?

What makes you feel sad?

What do you worry about?

What do you like best about yourself?

What do you like least about yourself?

If you could change one thing about yourself, what would it be?

Set special times aside with each of your children to listen to them. Really listen to them. A multitude of behavior problems can be solved by simply spending more time with your children and giving them your undivided attention.

Remember. Children don’t need "things" as much as they need a parent who cares enough to spend time with them. Priceless.
