You’ve visited pet shops and researched different species of pet birds and found the one that will be just right for you and your family. But wait! Before you get too excited about your new bird, there are still some things you need to do before you bring him home. Use this checklist to make sure you have everything you need for your new pet. Bird Cage After you have decided what type of pet bird you would like to own, you need to choose a cage that is appropriate for that species of bird. The cage should be suited to the bird’s size and be big enough for your bird to walk around and flap his wings. When picking out the size, don’t forget that you will need to add perches and food bowls. These items take up room in the cage so you will need to take that into consideration. Once you have chosen the right size, be sure and set it up before you bring the bird home. You will also need to find the perfect location for it. When choosing a location to put your bird remember to keep the cage away from windows and drafty areas in your home. Also, put the cage in a spot where the bird will be able to interact with the family. Food and Treats The best way to choose food for your bird is to ask the breeder or pet shop owner what type of food the bird has been fed so far. Many birds can be picky eaters so it will ease his adjustment period if you can give him the same food that he has already gotten used to. Also, have on hand some bird treats and vitamins to keep your new bird healthy. Toys Pet birds are intelligent creatures. Taking this into consideration, they will need toys that keep them entertained and mentally stimulated. A bored bird can quickly become destructive so it is important to keep him supplied with bird-safe toys. You can either purchase toys for your bird at the pet store or make some yourself. A favorite for birds is a cardboard tube that has been painted with food coloring. After the tube has dried, simply cut the tube up into spirals and place in your bird’s cage. Birds love to play with these and like the bright colors. An added plus is it is practically a free toy for your bird. Bird Vet Just like your cat or dog needs to go to the vet, your pet bird will too. It is best to go ahead and locate an avian vet before you bring your bird home. In the event that your bird gets sick, it’s nice knowing that you already know a vet to take him to. Once you have your birdcage, food, supplements, treats, perches, and toys, you should be good to go. Now is the time to bring home your new pet bird and let him become a part of the family.
