Bird Toys You Can Make for Your Pet Bird Your pet bird is entertaining to play with and watch especially when he has a new toy! Because birds are intelligent animals, it is important to keep them supplied with plenty of toys that stimulate his mind and keep him entertained. Birds that are bored become noisy, destructive, and begin to behave badly. To avoid having this happen try making your bird some toys so you can keep him supplied. Here are some simple ideas for homemade bird toys that will keep your bird entertained: Paper Use plain paper that hasn’t been colored or written on. Birds will entertain themselves for hours with paper that has been crumpled up into balls that they can roll around and chew on. Birds also like it when you cut paper into strips and weave it through the bars of their cage. It’s a challenge for them to tug and pull the strips out and keeps them very busy. Shoestrings and Milk Caps You can hang shoestrings from the top of the cage for your bird to chew on and for an extra treat, save your old caps that come off of the milk jugs. Punch a hole in the caps and string them on to the shoestrings. Feathers When you clean your bird’s cage, save the feathers that he has molted. When you have a small collection of feathers, tie the ends together to form what looks like a mini-feather duster. Hang the feathers in his cage and he will feel like he has a friend to preen. It’s a great bird toy. Garden Glove Surprise Buy a new cotton glove that isn’t dyed. You can get these from any garden store. Put a "surprise" in the tip of each finger. The surprise can be a bead or small toy. Tie off each finger with brightly colored yarn and then fill the hand part of the glove with more treats like apple tree twigs or Milk Bone dog treats. This will keep your bird busy for quite a while. Plastic Bottle Take an empty, clear plastic bottle and put a few brightly colored objects like beads into it. Put the cap back on the bottle and let your bird go nuts trying to get the beads out. They love it! Wooden Spools Remove the thread from spools that you have bought and put them in the cage. Your bird will enjoy rolling the spool around and chewing on it. Cardboard Tubes Paint an empty paper towel or toilet paper tube with food coloring. Once the tube has dried, cut it into spirals or different shapes. Birds like the "spring" shaped spirals and will play with them. You can hang the spirals from the top of the cage to make getting them extra challenging. By making your own homemade bird toys, you can give your bird an endless supply of new toys that will keep him busy and won’t break your budget. Javier Hernandez
