By Javier Hernandez | Published  04/8/2009

Your pet bird is important to you and you want to take the very best care of him that you can. One way you can do this is by making food for your bird. Not only will this be healthier for your bird, it will save you money.

Here are some popular recipes for bird treats that you can make for your special bird friend.

Bird Bread - Take one box of corn muffin mix and mix one extra egg with the mix. Be sure and mix eggshell and all. To this, add one of the following:

1 cup of mixed vegetables
1 4-ounce jar of vegetable baby food
Pellets

Mix the ingredients together and bake in a muffin tin.

French Toast for Birds - This is easy and a treat that your bird will love. All you have to do is make French Toast as usual, but before you cook it, coat the bread with hulled seeds.

Pizza - Cook a regular pizza crust. After it has cooled, spread peanut butter on it and sprinkle with nuts and seeds.

Cheerio Necklace - String Cheerio cereal on a piece of wire and form into a look. Spread peanut butter on the Cheerios and coat with seeds. Hang in your bird’s cage.

Kabobs - Cut up pieces of fruits and vegetables and poke a hole in each piece. Buy some untreated rawhide and use it to string the chunks on. Hang in cage.

Bird Cakes - Take popcorn cakes and spread peanut butter on one side. After you spread the peanut butter, coat it in seeds.

Your birds will love these treats and look forward to them in addition to their regular food. To make your bird even happier, make your bird work for his food. Birds are natural foragers and in the wild, they spend most of their day looking for their next meal. Birds get bored sitting in cages all day so making them forage for their food is entertaining to them.

Your bird will actually enjoy the challenge if your hide his food. This is easy to do. After you make one of the tasty treats above, hide the food by putting it in a piece of crumpled paper or a small box. The box can be one that tea bags come in. Another good way to hide the food so your bird has to forage for it is to cut up empty cardboard tubing. Cut it into sections and hide a piece of food in each section.

Keeping your bird happy is easy to do. By giving him these special treats and letting him have fun finding them, he will be one happy bird.
