Alternative Treatments for Depression
By Javier Hernandez | Published  04/8/2009

If you are suffering from depression, you need treatment. The first treatment people often turn to is prescribed medication from their doctor. While some forms of depression require medication and are necessary, milder forms of depression can often be treated with natural alternatives. Many people choose these natural alternatives due to the fact that prescribed antidepressants can cause dependency and have other side effects.

If you are interested in trying alternative treatments for your depression, here are some of the ones that have had the highest success rate.

St. John’s Wort - This herb contains a variety of natural antidepressants. St. John’s Wort has been studied and well-documented and proven to be safe. This herb boosts neurotransmitter function and helps return your mood to normal.

EPA - This is an essential fatty acid that is found in Omega-3. Studies have shown that high doses of this fatty acid can cure acute depression and even suicidal thoughts. **If you are having suicidal thoughts or are suffering from acute depression, you need to see a medical professional immediately.**

Saffron - Another natural herb that has been long-known to cure depression. Many doctors find Saffron is as effective as Prozac.

DL-Phenylalamine - DLPA helps with depression by raising phenylethylamine levels in your brain. This herb increases and extends your endorphins which control your mood and pain levels.

Light Therapy - Many people suffer from SAD or Seasonal Affective Disorder. This type of depression is caused by lack of natural sunlight. By sitting under these special lights for a certain period of time, your body reacts as if it has been in the sun and restores your body to its normal state.

Kriya Yoga - This yoga uses rhythmic hyperventilation and has been shown to help with depression symptoms.

There are many ways to self-treat yourself for depression. The key is knowing when to seek help. The above suggestions have worked for others with a high success rate, but as always, be sure and get help for your depression if you feel that is severe.
