Because fibromyalgia is not curable, treatment has to focus on controlling and minimizing your symptoms. One of the ways of keeping fibromyalgia under control is through fibromyalgia diet. Research has not shown that specific foods affect fibromyalgia either positively or negatively, but many people who have fibromyalgia have reported that limiting certain foods does have a positive effect on their symptoms.
The first step in changing your fibromyalgia diet is to eat foods that are healthy for you. These foods include foods that are low in fat and high in antioxidants. Antioxidants boost the immune system and many feel that this helps stave off the symptoms of fibromyalgia.
There are some foods that you need to completely eliminate from your diet. These include:
Chocolate
Alcohol
Soft drinks
Coffee
High fat dairy foods
White sugar
White flour
Fried foods
Preservatives
Salt
Red meat
Tobacco
Nutrasweet and saccharine
So what is there left to eat? Fresh, unprocessed foods. Processed foods are full of preservatives, colorings, salt, and sugar. None of these are good for you whether you have fibromyalgia or not. Filling your body with these chemicals and additives is harmful to your body and it just gives your body more to "deal" with.
Take time to look at your diet. Feed your body whole, natural foods that have high vitamin and nutrient content. Choose foods that are high in Omega 3 and antioxidants to boost your immune system. Gradually get rid of all of the junk in your diet. Don’t try to do this overnight, but slowly over time. This way, you won’t shock your body and it will give you a chance to adjust your lifestyle.
By changing your diet, you will begin to notice an increase in your energy level. When you drink caffeinated drinks that are loaded with sugar, you are setting your body up on an energy, crash, energy, crash cycle. Add to this vicious cycle your fibromyalgia, and it spells disaster. Rid your diet of caffeine and you will soon begin to see that your energy levels will stay consistent and you won’t have that "wiped out" feeling so often.
Start eliminating these foods from your diet and add in the healthy foods and you will soon see improvements in your fibromyalgia symptoms. You will begin having more good days than bad days.
