How to Feed Your Family When You Don't Have Money
By Javier Hernandez | Parenting | Unrated

You didn’t plan on the economy falling apart. You didn’t plan on losing your job. You didn’t plan for any of these things. None of us are ever proud of it but sometimes bad things happen to good people. When bad things happen to you, you still have to feed your family. So what do you do if you find yourself in this situation with a house full of hungry kids? You ask for help.

Our government has many programs in addition to the basic food stamp program and there are many programs in your city that would be willing to give you a hand, you just have to know they exist. Here’s how to and where to look for help.

Food Stamps

Food stamps help low-income families buy food. If you have a very low budget, apply for food stamps to help supplement what you are able to provide for your family. Food stamps are available based on your family size and your monthly income.

Food Distribution Programs

FNS gives food to several different programs including schools, elderly, and summer camps. Search for "FNS" online to see what programs they have available in your area.

WIC

This program is for women, infants, and children. They provide food for low-income women with children.

Commodity Supplemental Food Program

This service is easy to find online as well. Search for "Commodity Supplemental Food Program" to find where you can get supplies from them. They provide food for low-income pregnant, postpartum or breastfeeding women, infants, and children under the age of six.

School Breakfast Program

Check with your school officials about this program. They offer a free breakfast to children who haven’t had one at home.

Summer Food Service Program

This program feeds children who might go without food during the summer months because the school program meals are no longer available.

Special Milk Program

This program offers cash reimbursement for milk served to children in public and private non-profit schools, high school grades and under.

You can’t always control your circumstances, when you really need help, consider checking into these programs to get food for your family.
