Reading Disabilities in Children

Why are reading disabilities important?

Reading constitutes the most important activity in the learning process of a child. The ability to comprehend the written symbols and translate them into meaningful concepts in the brain is as important as the speed of appreciation.

Only the pure reading disability due to a slowed or affected mechanism will be considered in this section.

What is the average reading profile of school-going children?

Harley has stated that 60% of school children will learn to read no matter what system or method is used. With these children, the reading skill is acquired as easily and naturally as walking or talking.

Another 20% will learn only with a modicum of extra help within the classroom situation.

This leaves about 20% of the child population, who will experience reading retardation of severe enough degree to need some kind of special help, either in the form of remedical instruction, special class participation or individual intensive tutoring.
