5 Movies to Watch on a Date
By Mack LeMouse | Dating | Unrated

Movies can make great dates; they can set the mood, give you something to talk about and give you a chance to snuggle up on the couch or at the back of the cinema. However taking a girl to see the wrong movie can be an awkward and embarrassing experience (Indiana Bones and Her Temple of Doom is a no, no on a first date…). With that in mind then, here are five films that will be sure-fire hits on a date.

The Grudge

Or any scary movie really, the idea here being that the girl will want to cuddle up to you so that you might protect her from the evil demons that once dwelled in her house. She may even want to get under the covers as everyone knows what a powerful defence they are against monsters (although there is that scene in The Grudge where the bad guy is under the covers so that could be off-putting…). Other good scary movies are The Exorcist, The Mummy, The Ring or The Others.

Jerry Maguire

Jerry Maguire must be one of the most quoted films of all time. ‘Show me the money!’, ‘You… complete me’, ‘You had me at hello’… I could go on. This reflects the class and the style that oozes from every pore of the film and while you might worry that Tom Cruise will make you look bad this is definitely a master-class in rom-com making and again has parts that anyone can enjoy. I’d save this for a few dates in though as it’s quite schmoozy. This is pretty much the finishing blow.

Rocky

Rocky is a man’s film that women can appreciate too. Here’s a guy giving everything in the ring and in the gym, taking on an unstoppable opponent and at the end of it all, all he wants is to be with his girl. You get to watch an awesome fight scene and educate her on what it is to be a man and she gets to appreciate the tender love story about a punch-drunk bum and his shy girlfriend. It’s not an obvious choice but that’s partly what makes it so good. Would probably work even better if you happen to be a boxer…

Love Actually

Love Actually is an emotional rollercoaster, no two ways about it. Sure it may technically be a chick flick but the multiple storylines mean it’s probably got something for everyone (and it has Tim from the office in it as well as Nick from My Family). From her perspective its emotional and you’ll look sweet and the good news for you is that she might cry meaning you’ll have to hug her. Again, it’s a bit heavy in parts so not for a first date but if you’ve been going out for a while this is a very good one that might surprise you (you pretty much have to already be on ‘I love you’ terms).

Aladdin

No matter what they tell you, every girl loves Disney. It’s the equivalent of Transformers or Action man for guys and it evokes the kind of fairy stale romance they used to dream about when they were little girls. Aladdin is particularly romantic (A Whole New World is something else…) and it’s also one of the funnier and more action packed ones so you can enjoy it too. Plus it has a monkey.
