Have you heard of a diet plan put together by a Fortune 500 CEO, a cardiologist, an endocrinologist and a gastroenterologist? Yes, we are talking about the Sugarbusters Diet!
What is the Sugarbusters Diet? As the name suggests, does it require that we cut down on sugars? Is it another low carb diet plan?
The Sugarbusters! Diet is based on the concept that consumption of high sugar foods results in increased production of insulin and consequently high blood sugar levels. The result is fat deposition and weight gain. It is technically not a low carb diet plan. There are no counting calories or weighing portions in this diet plan. It simply requires us to eliminate or cut down on foods which have a high glycemic index.
If you decide to follow the Sugarbusters! Diet, you will have to eliminate processed foods and high carb foods like white bread, corn, potatoes and the like. You will also have to say no to foods high in sugar like candy, ice cream and desserts. On the other hand you will have to include plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean meat and chicken into your diet. Dairy products are permitted provided they are low fat versions. This diet plan suggests limiting intake of saturated fats.
The Sugarbusters! Diet does not eliminate carbohydrates altogether. You can get your recommended intake of carbohydrates from whole grains such as brown rice or oatmeal, beans and low carb fruits and vegetables. Besides lean meat, fish, eggs, nuts and low fat dairy products are permitted but in moderation. The diet plan recommends using oils like olive oil or canola oil for cooking. Artificial sweeteners are also permitted, although jams, jellies, honey, food preserved in sugar syrup, pineapples, soft drinks and beer are forbidden. Foods like pasta, white rice and potato, items like cake, bagels, pizza and doughnuts are also forbidden in this diet plan. However, dark chocolates, jams, jellies and juices without added sugar, sugar free desserts and caffeine are permitted but in moderation.
It must be obvious by now that the Sugarbusters! Diet is relatively simple and easy to follow. It only involves cutting down or eliminating certain foods. There are no specifications as to the amount that you must eat or how many calories you ought to consume.
The problem with this diet plan is that it is a "one size fits all" kind of plan. It has not been tailored as per individual requirements. Different people have different glucose tolerance levels and a plan which works for one person need not necessarily benefit another.
No other diet plan is as simple and straightforward as the Sugarbusters! Diet, so if you are starting out on a weight loss program, you can try out this diet plan and see if it works for you.
