The movement of "going green" is slowly catching up right from the individuals’ level up to big industries. It involves addressing human exposure, illnesses related to the dynamic environment due to the unfriendly human use of natural resources which include soil, water and air and emission of harmful chemicals which cause irreparable damages to the environment.
"Green Cleaning" has also become a hot topic in industries. This involves using environmental-friendly chemicals and ingredients while cleaning to preserve both the quality and health of the environment. It is also about spreading awareness about disposing wastes in a manner friendly to earth.
Initially, the main emphasis was on the area of reducing the emission of aerosols which damage the ozone layer. The aerosols emit CFCs, also called chlorofluorocarbons which have created a hole in the ozone layer letting the harmful UV (Ultraviolet) radiations to enter the planet. These rays are harmful to the health of the humans and can cause various risks like global warming, skin cancer and also cataract. Once the EPA banned the CFC propellants, all the consumers have shifted to non-CFC products.
Another major concern which haunted the EPA was the smog created by Volatile Organic Compounds which were formed by the reaction of sunlight with the nitrogen oxides.
Once the public enforces their ‘green requirements’ to the manufacturer and supports the green movement, it would enforce the competitors and motivate them to follow the demands.
The current focus is on the carbon footprint which deals with the emission of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere by average individuals, either directly or indirectly by taking into account the daily activities of the person.
Individuals need to use environmental friendly products for cleaning, maintenance and shopping. Avoid chemicals products like cleaning liquids, chemical disinfectants which can pollute the environment by their toxic nature. Try using natural products like olive oil, white vinegar, borax, vegetable soda, baking soda, washing soda and lemon juice. There are eco-friendly products available in the market for cleaning. Though they are slightly expensive, they are worth for the purpose of saving the environment. For choosing washing powders, be conscious of the chemicals and non-biodegradable components present in them before choosing. Avoid phosphate based powders as they could be hazardous to the environment.
While disposing wastes, aerosol refill containers need to be sorted out from the rest of the containers and sent for recycling by following the specified instructions. It is also the duty of every individual to conserve the natural resources and save power, fuel and gas for future generations. Try and follow simple power saving tips by switching off the appliances which are not in use, reusing and recycling waste, donation of non-usable materials which are in good condition instead of disposing to the bin and also avoiding non eco-friendly materials as far as possible.
In general, it is the duty of every individual to take an account of the daily activities and consciously adopt simple practices and adapt a lifestyle which could be easier for Mother Nature.
