Selecting a Dog Breed
By Jonathan Pitts | Pet Related | Unrated

If you are planning to invite a dog into your family, you have to take care of several factors regarding the breed of the dog that best fits in your family and your needs. Here are some tips that can help you on selecting a dog breed and making a perfect selection.

• Consider the amount of space you can provide to your dog. If you are planning to allot a very small amount of space for the dog then select smaller dogs and are not very energetic. High energy dogs demand large amount of space and if they are not convenient they will develop behavioral problems.

• Texture of the dog you prefer. Some breeds have a very silky fur that you cannot resist to cuddle it. Some other dogs have a bristly fur. If you have fur allergies, consider the variety that does not shed fur extensively.

• Extent of maintenance you can offer is the major factor you have to take in to account while selecting a dog breed. Some breeds demand heavy maintenance and if you do not have a spare time to groom your dog appropriately, it will lead to health problems that may pose health risks even to you.

• Extent to which the dogs are prone to allergies. It is better to select the dogs that are highly resistant to allergies.

• The activity level of the dogs you require. Decide how you want your dog to be involved in your life, just a one that just cuddles with you while watching TV or actively involved with you while you go out for jogging or on a walk.

• If you love swimming and you like to have your dog with you while swimming then select a variety that can swim conveniently.

• If you like to go out for a hunt along with your dog on a weekend then select a breed that loves to hunt.

• Whether you want an intelligent dog that gets easily trained with what you teach. Some breeds are highly intelligent but are hard to train while others are very easy to train but are not very intelligent which demands a great amount of your patience to train them.

• Some breeds are highly possessive and do not accept other pets or kids. So select a breed accordingly if you have other pets or kids at home.

• Certain dog breeds always need company with either other pets or people. They cannot stay independently and are very scary when left alone. So, if you do not stay at home for maximum amount of time then select a dog that can be on its own.

• If you are alone at home then you wish to have a dog that is not just your partner but can also guard you from intruders. Certain breeds are very good watch dogs and if they find anything foul they bite very badly.

• Life span of the dog is another factor that has to be considered while selecting a breed. The average life span is 12 years. If you have kids they get attached with dogs very easily and if you select one with very short life span then kids get upset in the absence of their friend. In such cases it is better to select one with a longer life span.

By considering the above factors you can get a dog breed of your interest very easily without much worry and thinking.
