Vitamin D – Vitamin D is crucial for the absorption of calcium and phosphorous. Both of these are incredibly vital nutrients with calcium strengthening our bones, teeth and ligaments so improving our strength and protecting against injury and phosphorous being the key ingredient in Andenosine Triphosphate – the crucial energy source of all life. Additionally, muscle contractions cannot be sustained without an ample supply of calcium making it essential for endurance. Vitmain D is found mostly in dairy products such as milk and eggs and so vegans should again supplement their diet (or just start eating normally…. Ahem…).
Thiamine (Vitamin B1) – Thiamine is required for muscle growth and is also one of the building blocks of haemoglobin, found in red blood cells and also made of iron which transport the oxygen through body so supplying us with energy. This is particularly important for athletes who exert themselves over long periods such as long distance runners or marathon runners. Studies have in fact shown that supplementing with Thiamine will improve such athletic performance.
Pyridocine (Vitmin B6 ) – Pyridocine, like Thiamine, has been demonstrated to boost athletic performance and is higher demand the more exertion is involved. It also plays a key role in muscle growth and the metabolism of carbohydrate meaning it will help give you lean muscle mass. It’s also linked to your intake of protein so that the more protein you eat the more Pyridocine you need.
Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C) – Vitamin is perhaps best known for its ability to boost the immune system thereby combating against all manner of viruses, most notably the common cold. It’s also great for energy and can be a great pick me up when consumed. Additionally it helps in the absorption of iron, which is used for strength and in our haemoglobin helping the body to transport oxygen around our bodies. As though that wasn’t enough it’s also another good antioxidant aiding in your ability to not die and is also key in the formation of collagen which is a part of the connective tissue that joins bones and muscles.
I have recently begun taking my vitamins and minerals again in the form of a single tablet (Berocca – voted in Men’s Health as the best energy supplement) and since I have I’ve felt amazing benefits. Not only do I feel generally more energetic, but I feel healthier, more awake and haven’t had a cold since I started. I’m even sure that my skin and hair look healthier which is great as I’m coming up to my graduation. I remembered recently that this was how I felt when I was little, when I was taking my Super Ted vitamin tablets. Coincidence or something more? Vitamins and minerals = essential.
