Choosing a ‘special’ name for your baby can be daunting or confusing. There are so many choices today and thanks to the information spread all over the web regarding the importance of names and the creativity of people involved in choosing one, people do find it mind-boggling to finalize on one.
Here are some tips to choose ‘the dream name’ for your baby.
• Choose a name that you would fall in love with. The name should sound emotionally pleasing to you.
• Do not bother too much about what others would say. Some names may sound weird to others but your heart may say that’s the right choice for your little one. Do not get carried away by other’s opinions or get disappointed at what you like. Do not end up finally picking a name what others like as tastes are quite subjective.
• Involve your partner. You need to sit down with your partner for finalizing the name of your baby. Discuss with him in-depth and express why you want to choose the name.
• Give priority to your child’s possible acceptance. Your child’s choice is in a way, more important than your personal one. While you name your baby, imagine somebody calling him with the name in public or in cafeteria, consider the possibility that the name you keep may be bullied in the social circle for fun. If you think the chances are high, do consider revising your choice as your child may start detesting the name and refrain from building his social circle because people start teasing. They slowly start then hating any choice you make for them too in the future!
• Traditional names and spellings. Whether you want to still stick to traditional naming or bring in novel spellings is a personal choice. But do keep in mind that it should not be difficult to remember the spelling you have kept. If people mess around too often, then your child has to keep bothering about it everywhere, right from admission or identity procedures. Do not make his life more complicated by being too creative!
• Be creative. Most people do not want to stick to the normal family name anymore. You may invent a name or vary the spelling to suit your choice, but bringing in a fresh international name can really add a lot of attention.
• Names with meanings. Most parents try and name their child after what the name means. It may relate to ethnicity, mythology or background. As long as they sound really graceful, they may be the apt choice!
• Consult websites. Numerous websites offer the choices of names and their relevant meanings. Research on some of the popular websites of your choice. You may hit upon one that catches your attention!
• Do not depend too much on destiny. Do not be a victim to books and websites which suggests a name that claims to control your child’s destiny.
• Naming is fun. Naming is definitely mind-boggling but it should be a funny, memorable and enjoyable experience. Enjoy every moment of it as you may not get a chance to do the same again.
