Grooming a Poodle
By Jonathan Pitts | Pet Related | Unrated

Whenever you come across a neatly groomed poodle, have you ever wondered about how well the pet has been groomed and maintained? Do you often think of the way how it has been groomed? It might be tempting to think that the haircut of that poodle is because of the dog handler or the poodle owner is the one who decided that it has to be that way.

However, the fact remains that poodles have evolved from their ancestors in such a way that modern day poodles have distinct features that their older counterparts have never had. They have evolved from being the gypsies’ pets to the current stage where they are adorable and cute to look at. The hairstyle of the poodle likewise has been one of evolving from a more primitive ancestor to one that is well groomed.

If you want to take your poodle to a dog show and need tips on how to groom it better, it would be worth remembering that there are some acceptable categories of the show that the poodles can be entered into. These categories are determined by the American Kennel association that is the central agency for conducting dog shows all over the US. In the category for poodles, the American Kennel club allows three categories of hair styles that are allowed for poodles.

These have been finalized after studying the patterns of hairstyles that are prevalent among the poodles of all ages and sizes and shapes. Hence, the hairstyles of the poodles need to be in this format for it to be accepted in the show. The hair clips that are allowed are the standard clip and the English saddle clip along with the cleft clip. So, your poodle has to have a hair style that has to conform to one of these formats for acceptance.

If you want your poodle to compete in the dog show, you better start preparing for the dog show well in advance. This would mean that you need to make sure that you start grooming your poodle at least a year before the intended date of the dog show. Grooming a poodle is an exercise that involves time and effort as well as lots of patience. So, you need to have deep pockets as well as an enduring commitment to the cause of your poodle. Clipping of the poodle must be done every six to eight weeks and the hairstyle should be determined in advance. There is no point in spending time and money grooming your poodle, only to find that it does not conform to the specifications laid down by the Kennel club.

It is better to take your poodle to a professional instead of grooming the hair style at home. If you want to groom your poodle at home, do remember to take some advice from an expert and get the necessary grooming supplies from a pet store that is nearby your house. It is often difficult to find all the supplies at one place and you may have to go to multiple stores to get all the supplies for your poodle.
