Let’s face it. Children are expensive and parents often wonder how they will cater to their children’s needs on a limited budget. Unforeseen expenses make matters worse so it is necessary to save money for the future.
Here are a few tips to help parents save money:
• Buying clothing for children is expensive business. The problem is after all the effort and money that goes in to buying the outfits your child needs, he outgrows them within minutes. Children grow fast and the need for new clothes never ends. You can cut down the money spent on clothes by using hand me downs amongst siblings. Keep aside clothes your first child has worn from the time he was a baby and use them for the next child.
• Children outgrown their toys just as fast as they outgrow their clothes so it is really not wise to buy brand new toys and accessories for your child. Get such stuff from second hands stores or pawn shops. They offer much cheaper rates than regular stores.
• Get together with relatives and friends and exchange stuff you don’t need for things you need.
• Instead of buying books, CDs etc, make use of lending libraries. By taking a membership, you should be able to borrow books or CDs for a nominal fee. This is much cheaper than buying them.
• Make the most of sales and discounts. You will be able to save a bundle on clothes, groceries etc. Cut and use coupons and vouchers you find on cartons or magazines.
• Make gifts at home. Handmade gifts have more values than expensive ones because of the time and effort spent on them. If someone you know has given you a gift you really don’t need, pack it and give it also as a gift to someone else.
• Pack lunch for your child. You will be able to ensure that your child eats healthy plus you will be able to save lunch money.
• Avoid dining at fast food outlets. Most parents tend to take their children for burger and fries at least once a week. Pack a picnic instead. Your children will get fresh air, plenty of space and good homemade food. The best part is that it is easy on your pocket too.
• Learn to mend items especially clothes. For example, a simple darn may make a sock or sweater appear perfect. If you do the job well, no one will even notice.
• Save coins. Learn to put aside some coins each day in a piggy bank or box. Teach your children to do the same and you will be amazed at the amount you accumulate over a month.
• The internet offers several bargains on certain purchases so keep check out the prices on the internet before you buy things for your child. You may find a bargain you never imagined.
• Invest money wisely. Save money for your child’s tuition well in advance. Similarly, put your money in a savings account that offers good interest rate so that you can add on to your savings.
