Gifts such as wine and chocolates are really just tokens unfortunately – they make great spontaneous prizes or great ways to add to the effect of everything else you’ve bought but aren’t quite the centre piece you need. It shows an intimate understanding of your girlfriend and I really don’t think I need to tell you the benefits. A lot of girls enjoy dressing up which makes it fun for them too and it will make her feel sexy and wanted. Just make sure you get her something else too or you might look a little selfish…

If you buy a more standard gift such as a CD, DVD or book then you can make it far more romantic by making sure it’s something you know she enjoys – a favourite band or actor. Even better is one that she’s not heard of but that perfectly caters to her tastes. By demonstrating you really know your girlfriend inside out you can show her that you really care and make the gift far more romantic.

None of these romantic gift ideas take much effort in the making department however so if you really want to show her you care you need something else that represents a significant amount of work and personal knowledge about her. In short, girls are soppy, and if you can show her your soppy side too you’ll win major brownie points. While the mixed tape is out, you can still impress her with a collage of pictures of the two of you, or even just a single photo that you like of you both that’s been put into a nice frame. A friend I know who lived by a beach made his own frames from driftwood with shells attached to it… but then that really was rather gay…
