Parenting Teenagers — A Tough Task
By Rick Missimer | Parenting | Unrated

Parenting teenagers today is not as easy as it sounds, you should know the specific ways to be a part of their life. Teenage is a time when you can expect a rebellious and a challenging behavior from your child. These are the days when teenagers love to challenge the adult values and do experiments on their own lives. They feel they can change the world by playing with their choices and decisions on which their future depends.

A parent not being a part of his or her teenage child’s life means that his or her future is abandoned. Parents often complain that their teenage sons or daughters hate them and do not listen. This is because the parents do not know the right way to enter their children’s closet. Teenagers do not know that poor academic results will sink their career or fast driving can hurt somebody, they simply are having fun in their own little world.

When you are parenting teenagers, it is important to stay connected with your children in order to save them and give them a healthy and respectful adulthood. Firstly, you need to stay in contact with your child, good communication should be there. Do not talk much, instead listen to them and pay attention on the words spoken to know what is going on in the teenager’s life. This will open the window to their life for you.

Secondly, do not force or convince them upon anything. Do not value your beliefs in front of them. Just tell them about what you think is right and what is not, do not tell them to leave a certain habit because you do not like it. Their values are developing, so assert yours without hurting theirs. Thirdly, be appreciative on even the most little things they do in the right manner, this will boost their confidence level. Teenagers are in need of a lot of encouragement; reward them whenever they show a sight of responsibility.

Fourthly, be tolerable because your teenage son or daughter will be entering into adulthood pretty soon. Do not give them too much security or else they would feel annoyed. Face some friction along with using defiance, so the teenager can make his or her own values in the world and not be totally dependent on you. Last but not the least, refrain from punishing them on little things, learn to ignore until any big issue comes up. If you will keep on putting restrictions on small stuff, one day they will run out of control, so save the heavy anger for something really serious.

Instead of taking teenagers as mistake-making machines, parents should consider them as young friends. Perhaps the parents can learn something out of their little world by peeking into it. Tomorrow depends on today’s youngsters; help them to take a strong stand!
