By Jason Ladock | Skin Conditions | Unrated

Melasma refers to dark patches that are seen on the skin, in the regions of forehead, cheeks and temples. The darkening of the skin is due to hyper pigmentation. The severity increases with the aging process. Aging results in the loss of tenderness, complexion and elasticity of the skin. These changes appear a bit earlier and are common in women compared to men. This is mainly due to the hormonal disturbances, which is commonly seen in women above the age of thirty or forty. Increased productions of hormones that result in production of melanin are the culprits for melasma. Other causes for melasma include stress, allergic reactions to certain foods, medications and cosmetics.

There are a great number of creams available to treat melasma, but it is recommended to use simple homemade recipes to treat it. A regular application of these natural recipes will not only get rid of the problem of melasma, but also helps in the process of skin renewal by bringing the elastin levels to normal, it will help to give a good skin texture, helps in skin repair, eliminates the dead skin cells that are either deposited on the surface or clogging the skin pores and improves skin complexion. Here are some simple natural remedies for melasma.

Vinegar: vinegar which is acetic acid has the property to cleanse the skin, and thereby improves the complexion. Cleanse your face with vinegar that is diluted with equal amount of water. It also serves as a skin softener. Apple cider and other natural vinegars can also be used.

Onion Juice: onion juice that is made by squeezing grinded onion can be used to cure pigmentation problems. Onion juice mixed with apple cider should be applied twice a day for best results. Another simple way is to dip onion slices in vinegar and place them over the pigmentation areas.

Lemon juice: application of lemon juice helps to get rid of pigmentation problems very easily in no time. The acidic nature of lemon results in the pealing of top layer of the skin.

As stress is one cause for melasma, it is recommended to take measures to get rid of that excess stress. It can be easily achieved by regular practice of exercises.

Drinking plenty of water helps to keep the skin supple and also helps to get rid of the toxins very easily in the form of sweat.

Consume a balanced diet rich in all essential nutrients especially vitamins and minerals. Fresh fruits and vegetables are good sources of vitamins and minerals.

If you are not satisfied with the results of the above natural ways, here are other ways to get rid of melasma.

Bleaching creams containing hydroquinone can be used to treat melasma. However, it is recommended to discontinue using bleaching creams after a period of six months. Make sure that while using bleaching creams avoid excess exposure to sun, soaps and cosmetics with harsh chemicals, or even use of strong cleansers.

Laser skin resurfacing is another option to cure melasma. But, one has to be very careful and avoid harsh chemicals and sun rays.

Last note, when using any of the above measures, it is recommended to discontinue using them if any side affects like rashes or irritation is observed.
