How to Break Bad Eating Habits
By Jonathan Pitts | Nutrition | Unrated

If you find yourself eating almost anything to your heart’s content, then you should start getting worried. This is because you have indulged into a bad habit of eating, which can be detrimental to your health. The challenge then for you is to find ways to break bad eating habits which you may have been doing for a very long time. Just take time to do some pointers to help you out.

Eat your breakfast. Remember to eat breakfast first thing in the morning because this will start your metabolism. This will also help keep you from eating a lot at lunch. Oatmeal or low fat yogurt is good to have at breakfast.

If you need to take snacks, set limits on what you have to eat. Eat fruits instead of cookies and chocolates. Avoid finger foods and sweet and fatty dips. You can munch on some carrots and celery dipped in light salad dressing.

Don’t eat before bedtime. Eating will reduce the length and quality of your sleep. It will also affect digestion because food takes time to be digested in the stomach.

As much as possible, do not binge. Instead of eating 3 full meals, you can take 5-6 small meals. This will control your overeating. Remember to take the time to enjoy and savour your food. This is a good way to curb your appetite.

Drink plenty of water during the day. Drink water before eating as this will make you feel full. Also, drink water during eating so you can eat less. Have water to go with your meals instead of juices or soda because this is healthier for you.

Eat more healthy foods. If you want to eat, then do so by eating more vegetables and fruits because these have the vitamins and nutrients that are good for you. Always have these present in your meals.

Don’t do your grocery while you are hungry. This will lead to impulsive buying of food without thinking too much of your choices. Often, your choice would be unhealthy because sweets and other snacks are your choices during this time.

Make smart choices. Since you are now aware of your bad eating habits, you can now make the right choice to avoid them. However, do not starve yourself. Eat if you are hungry but remember you should do it right and smart.

Do not eat while you are busy doing something else. This is a common and bad habit to do. If you watch TV, your concentration is focused on what you are watching and not on the food you are eating. You lose track of how much you eat. The result is you ending up overeating.

Take time to eat. Do not just put your food in your mouth. Try to downsize your plate so you can just have enough food to eat. Try to avoid using treats, such as ice cream or other sweets, as a reward for you after a long day.

Engage in exercise. It will help you maintain a healthy weight, and it can help control compulsive eating because, like food, it produces stress relief and a feeling of well-being.
