Home Remedies for Diarrhea

Diarrhea is a disorder which is characterized by increased number of watery stools. The problem of diarrhea can occur due to many reasons. Diarrhea is frequently encountered in infants as they keep licking their fingers which results in easy entry of bacteria in to their gut. These bacteria initiate series of changes that result in poor water absorption by the intestine and indigestion, thereby resulting in diarrhea and vomiting. Another reason for diarrhea is lactose intolerance which is seen in some infants. In adults, diarrhea could be due to bacterial infections or food poisoning. Certain drugs such as penicillin group of antibiotics cause death of normal resident flora and results in dominance of harmful bacteria and thereby resulting in diarrhea.

Diarrhea has to be controlled immediately as it may turn into a life threatening disease due to excess of fluids. Other symptoms that accompany diarrhea include stomach pain, fever, nausea and vomiting. More severe cases may result in passage of blood and mucus along with the stools. In most of the cases, simple home remedies help to gain control over diarrhea. Another reason why home remedies have to be preferred over drugs is that apart from the above reasons, diarrhea might be initiated in some cases by the immune system to drive harmful substances out of the body. If you use drugs they will obstruct this defensive mechanism initiated by the immune system. Natural measures do not interfere with this process and at the same time keep the symptoms of diarrhea under control. The following are some of the natural remedies that are effective at treating diarrhea.

Blackberry tea cures mild diarrhea.

Wild oregano oil with anti parasitic, anti bacterial and anti viral effects helps to gain control over diarrhea that is caused due to intestinal bacterial infection.

Ginger helps to obtain relief from abdominal pain that is generally associated with diarrhea. If you cannot have raw ginger you can have ginger tea which will not only give relief from the abdominal pain but also gives relief from fatigue caused due to diarrhea. It even helps to gain control over vomiting.

Diarrhea results in dehydration which causes fatigue and dizziness. To avoid dehydration it is recommended to consume plenty of fluids. Stay away from caffeine and alcohol. Carrot juice and ginger ale help to increase the consistency of stools. But, avoid apple juice; it will only worsen the diarrhea. If vomiting exists, you should avoid fruit juices.

Boil brown rice in excess of water for about 45 minutes and drink that water. It will serve as a liquid diet that gets digested very easily and reduces the weakness.

For children, it is recommended to give oral rehydration therapy to avoid complications caused by dehydration. ORS fluids can be made even at home by mixing one teaspoon each of salt and sugar in a glass of lukewarm water and mix it thoroughly. The liquid has to be prepared fresh every time or use it within 24 hours.

I hope all the above measures come in handy to get relief from diarrhea without having to rush for a doctor, but if the symptoms of diarrhea persist, visit your doctor.
