Dieting After Age 50

Dieting is essential at all ages, especially after the age of 50, during which the basal metabolic rate drops down. Generally, certain amount of energy is utilized to maintain the body activity, which is termed as the basal metabolic activity and the rest of it is used to support our daily activities. At the age of 50 both the BMR and the daily activity get reduced and thus, the calorie requirements of the body also get reduced. If you keep consuming foods with high amount of calories then you will be in high risk of developing cardiac problems, diabetes, high blood pressure and other disorders. Now that you know the importance of dieting after the age of fifty, let’s have a look at the various measures that are to be taken.

• Quit consuming foods rich in saturated fatty acids. Unsaturated fatty acids are good for health. Fish is a good source of unsaturated fatty acids.

• It is essential to drink plenty of liquids, especially water. As the digestive capacity decreases there is a great chance of developing constipation. That’s why, drinking at least eight glasses of water regularly helps to prevent constipation.

• Consume a balanced diet rich in all nutrients like carbohydrates, proteins, fats, vitamins and minerals. Fresh fruits and vegetables are a rich source for vitamins and minerals. They are even rich in fiber content. Fiber helps to relieve the problem of constipation.

• If you are overweight, then the immediate measure you need to take is to be on a strict diet and weigh yourself regularly. Maintain a record of your diet and weight. Do a weekly assessment and find which foods are helping you more to lose weight and are also maintaining your health. If required, do not hesitate to ask some help of your family members. Feast yourself every weekend.

• Quit beer, caffeine rich foods, alcohol and soda. Most of individual at the age of 50 go for diet soda but it is better to quit it totally, instead have water. Don’t consume too much sweetened fruit juices, instead have fresh fruits.

• Once you have attained your desired weight, it is essential to continue the dieting measures to maintain your weight. For this, set an upper limit for your weight and take an oath to never weigh above that limit. This will greatly help you to control on your weight.

• Sometimes, it is possible that even after following the above measures, you still unable to control your weight. In most cases, the main reason is the hormonal changes. If you have a problem in hormonal changes, consult a physician immediately. In most of the cases, correcting hormonal problems helps to acquire the normal weight without taking any measures.

Apart from consuming a strict diet, it is essential to practice regular exercise. Yoga is the best exercise for individuals above the age of 50. By following the above strict measures, you can definitely maintain optimum weight even at the age of 50 without relying on those fad diets that promise weight loss within a short period of time.
