Saving Coral Reefs
By Jonathan Pitts | Environment | Unrated

The coral reef destruction is one of the main concerns of ecologists these days. These reefs provide home to a number of tropical fish and a variety of sea life. However, with the past few decades the coral reefs have changed a lot and almost 10% of the reefs have been destroyed putting the oceanic life into danger. There are a number of reasons that are the cause of damage to the reefs and if the right measures are not taken in time there might be possible endangering of the species that reside in these reefs.

Saving our reefs from the natural disasters and the climatic changes is a big concern for mankind. The reefs face a lot of threats because of the acidification of the oceans and coral bleaching. The increase in the sea levels because of the climatic changes, which can be attributed to global-warming, has increased the erosion of these reefs. Saving our reefs is all about what we can manage to do to avoid these threats to save the environment.

Governments, organizations and people from all over the world recognize that the globalization, climatic changes and natural disasters had a wide impact on the coral reefs but less is being done to preserve them. For this, we need to ask ourselves how are these changes going to affect out normal life and how can we avoid these changes.

There are a number of coral reef saving groups that have come up after 1997 when the year was declared, as "Year of the Reef" by President Bill Clinton. If you wish to contribute to saving the reefs, then you can be a part of one of these groups and contribute in your own way towards saving the reefs. With these groups working constantly to save the reefs, it is expected that almost 20% of the damaged reefs would be able to recover in the coming years.

Countries all over the world have woken up towards this save our reef program and have done a lot to save the coral reefs. There are countries that have banned the tropical fish harvest and Hawaii has gone ahead to ban the collection of tropical sea life from the Kona Coast. If there is not much action taken today, then the destruction of these coral reefs can result in the endangering of the life forms that exist in these reefs.

To be able to contribute to save our reefs, it is important that you educate yourself with the natural resources of the ocean and the best that you can do to save these reefs from erosion. Join an organization and promote their aim. Avoid throwing any waste in the sea water that is not biodegradable. Start from today and avoid using things that can cause harm to the environment. If you can contribute much to help prevent the global warming and the sudden climatic changes because of pollution, then start putting in your efforts. You never know that a small attempt that you make can help you save a species from becoming endangered. Rise today and save our reefs to save the environment.
