How to Deal With Dog Constipation?
By Jason Ladock | Pets Health | Unrated

Nearly all dogs are vulnerable to constipation. Just like human beings, constipation is a frequent occurrence in dog’s life as well. Usually caused due to poor diet and lack of exercise, constipation is the inability of the dogs to empty their bowels.

Since it is caused due to lack of exercise and proper diet, one needs to ensure that the dogs move their bowels as often as required. If you own a dog, take them for a walk every day. Make sure that you feed them with proper food, in order to eliminate the occurrence of constipation.

Street dogs are affected by this problem due to improper food intake, while house dogs may experience this problem, mainly due to lack of physical activities. Although not life threatening, they are very bothersome to deal with. A dog suffering from constipation may experience symptoms like loss of appetite, stress, vomiting, abnormal gait and difficulty in walking. Observe your dog for any abnormal behavior, and if you identify any of these symptoms then start working on a treatment plan for your dog.

Fortunately, there are several home remedies one can follow to treat their dogs from this ailment. Let’s have a look at few of the most effective treatments one can follow to heal their dogs from the problem of constipation.

The simplest treatment for dog constipation starts with a change in the diet plan of your pet. Food items like bread, chocolate, cookies and ice cream can worsen the constipation. One needs to keep their dogs away from such food items. Feed your dog with food items like wheat, raw meat, pumpkin and sweet potatoes.

Lack of water in the body can also result into constipation amongst dogs, which is why it is essential to keep your dog hydrated all the time by supplying them with adequate water in frequent intervals.

One can include Psyllium in the dog’s food to soften the pet’s stool. Use this treatment twice a day. Half a teaspoon would suffice on each occasion. Continue this treatment for a few days, until the problem eradicates completely.

Mineral oil is another good home remedy used for curing dog constipation. Include mineral oil in the dog’s meal for a week’s time, twice a day.

There are dogs which face the problem of constipation very often in short intervals. If constipation is a regular problem with your dog, then include vegetables in their meals on daily basis. This will ease the digestion process in the long run, and aid them in emptying their bowels without any complications.

If your dog does not pass stool for few days, despite your treatments, then you will need to consult a qualified veterinarian for proper medication. The veterinarian will diagnose the condition, and supply you with appropriate medication to feed your dogs.

It is imperative that you resort to treatments on timely basis, without ignoring any abnormal symptoms. Your pets are entirely dependent upon you for their care and treatment. Remember, no one knows your pet better than you.
