What Is Normal Blood Sugar Level?
By Jonathan Pitts | Diabetes | Unrated

In order to understand what normal blood sugar levels are, or when an individual is said to be diabetic, it is necessary to understand the functioning of the body.

The food that you eat daily is converted to sugar and then released into the blood stream. Insulin then moves this sugar from the blood to the body cells which burn it and convert it further into energy. This is a continuous process which occurs when you consume any food.

For normal people, the functioning of insulin is proper and it transports the sugar from blood to the cells and desirable amount of sugar is left in the blood. For diabetic patients, this sugar that is left in the blood stream is high and hence, it leads to further health complications. The blood sugar levels are measured in mg/dL (milligrams per deciLitre).

The desirable range of blood sugar levels is anywhere between 70 mg/dL and 120 mg/dL. Generally, the fasting blood sugar levels taken early in the morning is lower as compared to the sugar levels after a meal. If you find that during a random blood test taken during the day, your blood sugar level measures 200 mg/dL, then it means that you need to go for a fasting and non-fasting diabetes test and consult a doctor.

Nowadays, diabetes blood tests can be done at home easily through the diabetic meter kit which is easy to use. There are a whole range of such home care kits available in the market which can record the tests and store it for a period of time. You can also have devices capable of mailing the test results to your doctor!

Diabetic patients should follow the medication prescribed by their doctor religiously, and also adapt some simple lifestyle changes to keep the sugar level under control. Taking it lightly can lead to further health complications like cardiovascular diseases, stroke and damage to the feet.

Diabetic socks are recommended for the patients in order to prevent inflammation, blisters and sores on the feet. Eating a balanced meal at multiple slots can regularize your routine of intake and can also help you to follow healthy eating habits and avoid over eating. It is also necessary to follow a healthy exercise regimen in order to keep the blood glucose level in the desirable range.

Sometimes, your blood sugar level may reach the range which is lower than the recommended desirable levels. Such people may experience giddiness. In that case, it is recommended to drink something that could energize you instantly with lot of sugar content.

Severely diabetic patients are prone to heart diseases, stroke, kidney failures, blindness and amputation of legs and ultimately death. Obese people should take immediate steps to decrease their weight.

Diabetic patients who are working very hard to bring their sugar levels to normal can experience a shaky or restless feeling during the process as their body has been previously adapted to having such a high blood sugar level and a sudden dip takes some time to get used to.
