Stopping Cat Litter Box Odor
By Jonathan Pitts | Pet Related | Unrated

Most pet owners who love cats have to deal with their cat’s litter box odor. The owner has no choice but to have a cat litter box for the cat to do its proper disposal of waste each time it needs to. This may somehow cause some health environmental issues within the home, and it is just proper to take measures to control the problem.

• The cat litter box could be placed a little farther from the house; maybe a small distance away from the back door and preferably near a trash can. This is practical because the smell will not get inside the house and being near the trash can makes it easy to dispose of the litter.

• Make it a practice to clean the litter box every day. Scoop up litter from the cat litter box, place it inside the plastic bag and throw it in the trash can. Clean the litter box with soap and water. Don’t forget to clean the area surrounding the litter box to get rid of the odor left by some litter around it.

• You can spend a little more on litter box liners. These help in preventing the pungent odor smell from settling inside the litter box. It was found out that at times the remains or leftover residue cause the bad smell on the box; thus litter box liners are good to use.

• You can also make use of pan liners to cover the litter box. Just remember to frequently change the pan liner every time you take out the litter.

• Another good way to prevent bad odor of the litter box is the method of preparing the litter box. Don’t put all the litter into the box at once; instead put in enough to cover the box, then just add a little of the fresh litter on top of the previous layer every few days.

• You can make use of dryer sheets near the litter box, because these dryer sheets have a more common household scent and can be effective to overpower the bad odor of the litter box.

• You can make use of an air freshener, which helps in lessening or masking the bad odor of the litter box in a room where you placed it. It also helps if the room is well ventilated with good wide windows, so the odor will not be trapped inside the room.

• If you have many cats, have a litter box for each cat. The boxes can be put in different places but still away from the house. The cats can be trained to go to their own litter box, so that cat fighting will be prevented.

• It will also be good to buy better cat food for your cats. Sometimes, the contents of cheap cat food result to foul smelling waste by your cats.

• The cat litter box is important to the cat, so keeping it clean and as fresh as possible will make the cat go to it every time it needs to and that’s the way it should be.
