Colon cleanse, or better known as colon therapy puts into use the different alternative medical treatments, which are used for cleaning up of the fecal waste and toxins from the intestinal tract and the colon. Colon cleanse may be carried out by colon hydrotherapy or by taking oral cleansing products. Lets start with analyzing both the form of colon cleanse therapies.
The first colon hydrotherapy or better known as colonic, it makes use by injecting of water into the colon with the help of specially designed equipments. Colon hydrotherapy is carried out by a specialist. The specialist would insert a disposable speculum into the anal opening, and a flow of warm water is released in the colon. This warm water would result in muscle contraction of the colon and release of waste through the hose. The person undergoing the colon hydrotherapy might feel slight discomfort in the abdomen. The usual therapy takes up to 45 minutes to complete.
People usually go in for colon hydrotherapy to avoid constipation and to keep the colon free from waste accumulation. It is also believed that undergoing colon hydrotherapy can improve the overall health. However, it is advisable that before going in for colon hydrotherapy, you should consult your physician. Colon hydrotherapy should not be taken under special medical conditions like congestive heart failure, severe anemia, gastrointestinal cancer, ulcerative colitis, hemorrhoids and intestinal tumors. It should also be noted that pregnant women should not undergo colonic as it can result in uterine contractions.
People having undergone colonic might suffer from fatigue and nausea for quite some time after the session. Other rare complications might include electrolyte imbalance, perforation of the abdominal wall or a heart failure because of excess absorption of water. Usually the therapist would provide you with some supplements to be taken after the treatment.
The other method that involves ingestion of oral cleansers includes the intake of dietary fibers, laxatives or supplements. Some of the well-known oral cleansers include:
Psyllium: This is a dietary fiber that improves the normal bowel functioning. It helps by cleaning of the intestinal mucus lining resulting in increasing the bulk of the stool. You can consume up to one teaspoon of psyllium powder taken three times a day with a glass of water.
Fluids: Consume at least 8-12 glasses of fluid to maintain a healthy body and proper cleaning of the colon. You can also have vegetable broth which helps increase the process of colon cleaning.
Fresh fruits and vegetables: Consuming fresh foods and vegetables would result in increasing the dietary fiber and would help in colon cleanings in an effective manner.
Cleansing of the colon is a natural process, and there is no scientific evidence that external colon cleansing is beneficial. However, for people with severe constipation problems, this is recommended as it can help them relive the strain. Colon cleansing often results in loss of body friendly bacteria, and hence it is important that you have some probiotic supplements that would help you maintain the normal composure of the digestive tract.
