Which Birth Control Pill Is Safest?

Choosing a birth pill is a very personal decision. With a number of birth control pills available in the market, deciding which would be the best for your health and the safest is a difficult task. It is always advisable that you consult your physician when making any decision on which birth control pill is the safest for you. However, here are a few things that you should consider when deciding on which birth control pill is the safest.

The first thing that you should consider is to educate yourself on the types of birth control pills that are available. There are mainly two pills, the mini pills and the combination pills. The combination pills have both progesterone and estrogen; whereas the mini pill contains only progesterone. When you consume a combination pill, then it prevents pregnancy in three ways:

1. It prevents the ovulation.

2. It increases the cervical mucus.

3. It decreases the uterus lining which is a supporting factor for pregnancy.

On the other hand, mini pills act only in the last two ways like by increasing the cervical mucus production and decreasing the uterus lining. Both of these pills are found to be equally effective, but studies show that the combinations of pills are much reliable as compared to the mini pills. But, when it comes to counting the side effects, the combination pills have more side effects than the mini pills.

Another factor to determine which pill would be the safest for you is to take your weight into consideration. It has been shown that birth pills do not work effectively in overweight women, especially if the pill has a lower hormone level. If your body mass index is higher than 27, then it is important that you consult your doctor on which pill would be the most suitable and safest for you. The doctor might recommend a pill with a higher hormonal level.

It is important that you also consider your gynecological history. For example, if you have experienced bleeding while on pills, then you might have to take a pill with a higher hormonal level. If you are suffering from endometriosis then you might prefer a pill that you can have continuously. Depending on the severity of your condition, your gynecologist might suggest which pill would be the best for your health condition. Age is another factor that has a significant importance in deciding which pill would be the safest for you. If you are a smoker or a heavy drinker, ask your doctor first for the right birth control pill.

It is best advised that you inform your doctor about all the medical conditions that you have and also about your medical history. If you have a history of blood clotting, then the doctor might look for an alternative for you. Also, women who have heart problems are not supposed to take birth control pills. Discuss your and your family’s health details with your doctor before opting to take a birth control pill.
