An Overview of Toothache

Toothache can be the worst pain that you may ever experience. For some people the pain can be intolerable and you would want something to get immediate relief from this pain. A toothache can occur just out of the blues and most of the times it is unexpected. If you are wondering what are the causes of tooth pain and what can you do to get immediate relief from it, then here is some useful information.

One of the main causes of toothaches is the decay of the teeth. If you have not maintained proper oral hygiene then it can possibly result in severe tooth pain. The tooth decay mainly occurs because of low oral hygiene and infrequent check ups. If your toothache is because of the tooth decay then meet your dentist to have a proper check up and treatment for the same.

Another cause of toothache can be a cracked tooth. It is difficult to determine whether the toothache is a result of a crack, because the crack does not appear in the x-ray and neither is it visible to the naked eye. Usually, the pain resulting from a cracked tooth is unbearable, because the crack exposes the nerves and also the food and beverages that you intake. If your toothache does not subside even after trying out some common remedies, then it is better that you see your dentist and ascertain the cause.

Often, dental treatments are also a cause for toothache. If you have had a root canal treatment done before or have had a filling done, then you can experience pain at a later stage. There are chances that the crown or the filling might come off and this would again leave the anatomy of your tooth exposed, which can result in pain.

If the roots and the nerves of your teeth are exposed to air then this can result in toothache. Such a situation can be caused when you brush vigorously or have receding gums. The only way in which you can prevent this is by making your brushing movements soft and using a soft toothbrush.

Toothache is a common problem in people who chew tobacco or smoke. Constant use of tobacco might leave your teeth damaged and also expose your nerves and roots, which might result in toothache. Similarly, smoking tobacco can also result in toothache but the ache might take time to develop.

For getting relief from toothache, you can try some home remedies; the best can be chewing raw onion, this kills the bacteria and the germs that might be a possible cause of the pain. You can also make use of an ice pack to get relief from the pain. Try making a peppermint drink, take 5 gms of fresh peppermint and boil it in a glass of water, add a tablespoon of salt and boil it. Cool until it becomes lukewarm and drink it to get instant relief. Clove oil or plain clove has been one of the best remedies since ages.

Though these home remedies work for most of the toothache cases, but it is important that you consult your dentists as soon as possible to get to know the cause of the pain and also get the right treatment.
