Recycling Motor Oil
By Jason Ladock | Environment | Unrated

Cars have become more a necessity than luxury. Car owners regularly use motor oil to run the vehicle. But many are unaware of the fact that used motor oil is still of great value for various industries like the petrochemical industries.

Storing used motor oil and recycling it can generate a lot of useful energy required for our daily life. Do not ignore the recycling of the used motor oil as it has unbelievable benefits. If you recycle just 2 gallons of used oil, you can provide electricity to an average residence for almost a day!

Motor oil that has already been used once can be recycled and utilized as fuel oil. Used oil can also be further processed in petrochemical industries. Motor oil serves as a raw material for refining.

The recycling is generally done at certain service stations, community center which collects oil for recycling, quick lubes, car dealers and other local curb side or repair and maintenance facilities. You need to gather more information about the recycling center in your local area.

You can collect the used motor oil in a suitable container having secure screw. Ensure that the container is clean without any other household chemicals and is also leak proof. For example, a plastic milk jug is suitable for this purpose. You should also not to mix this used oil with other antifreeze substances or transmission fluids. Note that the used motor oil can catch fire like any other ordinary oil. Hence, it has to be kept away from children and pets.

You may also contact curb side pickups or automotive stores for getting suitable containers in order to store the used motor oil. Once you collect enough oil, hand it over to a car repair shop, an oil collection center, a car dealer or a local service station.

The collected oil can be further processed and used in furnaces for generating heat. Used motor oil can be reused by power plants to generate electricity for businesses, schools and homes. Refineries can process this oil and generate lubricating base oils which are further used to formulate engine oils.

There are various advantages of recycling motor oil. You can save the oil from draining into water bodies like lakes, rivers and streams which get polluted. The disposed oil can contaminate sewers, storm drains, back yards and landfills. Recycling motor oil also keeps it out of ground water which also means that you would get purer drinking water.

In addition, you can ask your automotive dealer to fill your vehicle with re-refined oil rather than virgin oil. However, ensure that the motor oil has been API certified which ensures that the re-refined oil has the desirable viscosity, performance capabilities as well as energy-conserving properties.

Hence, next time you change the motor oil in any vehicle like motorcycle, car, boat, truck, RV or lawnmowers, remember to store the old oil responsibly and carry it to a collection center! This would be one of your valuable contributions to save energy, conserve resources and protect your environment for your future generations.
