An Overview of Dyslexia Treatment

Dyslexia is defined as a neurological disorder that interferes in the general ability of reading and writing. Differentiating between normal and dyslexic people is difficult unless you observe them closely. There are many children who are born with dyslexia, which can only be observed when they start learning how to read and write. If any of your loved one is facing the problem of dyslexia, then there is nothing to worry about it. There are a number of educational tools that can help dyslexic people lead a normal life.

Treatment of dyslexia does not involve any counseling sessions or medicines. The most important part to know how to treat dyslexia is to understand the complication. The earlier the dyslexia is recognized the sooner and more effective the treatment can be. Starting with young age can help a dyslexic child to overcome the reading problems, though not completely but you can see an effective change in which the child perceives and understands things.

If your child is 3 years old and is diagnosed of dyslexia then according to the federal rules, the school authorities are required to construct an Individualized Education Program (IEP), which would be according to the needs of your child. The team would consist of you, some school authorities, the teacher, and some special instructors; you can also ask your child’s doctor to be a part of the team. The IEP will detail the teaching methods that would be best for your child and will set some objectives and goals for the year. The progress of your child is closely monitored and if at any point you feel that the IEP is not in your agreement then you can always make an appeal.

It is important that you work with your child and encourage him or her with the learning. There are a number of visual and audio exercises that you can perform with your child and it would help him improve his ability gradually. Remember that the learning ability is different from one dyslexic child to another. Hence, it is important that you focus on the progress that your child is making. Once you are done through particular exercises go back and revise. This will help your child differentiate between words and letters, and will make them realize the small mistakes that they make.

Developing motor skills is another important aspect of treating dyslexia. Most of the dyslexic children have motor problems, and getting them to write is a difficult task. You have to carry out some small exercises that will help their brain and hands coordinate the movements. Start with blocks and then move to making it cursive. Dyslexic children find it difficult to write cursive and you need to be patient with them. If monitored and worked on properly with the correct educational tools and the right instructors, you can see a marked change within a period of a year. However, it is important that you stay focused and do not lose patience with a dyslexic child. Dyslexia is not a disease but it is just a condition of the brain which can be treated with constant support and guidance.
