How Perfumes Are Made
By Mark Perry | Fragrances | Unrated

Perfumes are mixtures of essential oils, aroma compounds, fixative and solvents that when applied to the human body, it will give a great fragrant. Perfume types reflect the concentration of aromatic compounds in a solvent which is also known as ethanol. The smell of the perfume merely depends on the percentage of the concentration. It started out in Mesopotamia in Egypt and further developed by the Romans and Persians. There are strict guidelines on how perfumes were made, here are they:

1. Base resource

Through the years, people are looking for different ways to improve their body smell. Researchers never stopped seeking for more ways to find the right ingredients. Natural resources such as herbs provide pleasing smell which eventually became the base of most perfumes now a day.

However, with the help of the modern technology today, there are lots of ways to easily blend flavors and aroma which can easily suit your needs. Most perfumes today basically contain natural ingredients like flowers, grass, spices, fruits, wood, roots, leaves, gums and many more.

2. Chemical involvement

Once the base materials are obtained, chemists are now ready to blend and mix the base materials with other materials such as oils and alcohol. There are different methods in doing this, but one of the most famous processes is the steam distillation. To counter the overlay greasy texture of the perfume when the processes are done, a large amount of water and basic alcohol are added to neutralize the texture. The last two ingredients are essential to balance the consistency of the perfume.

3. Blending and aging

There are certain kinds of perfumes that needs to age before they reach their maximum aroma. These are mostly branded and come with a very expensive price. Blending and aging process is the last part of making perfumes. It is commonly done to prolong their life span into a longer one. The longevity and shelf life of a particular perfume merely depends on its ingredients. Through the years, the development of perfumes and colognes developed drastically. Companies were able to differentiate the male from female version of perfumes which is being practiced up to this day.

The right blending of any kind of perfume branded or not depends on the hands of the chemist. They are the one responsible in mixing and blending different ingredients to come out with a great perfume. They really play a big role because they provide a great smell even when blend with the body type.

With the modern development being discovered, the natural ingredients of perfumes are now being neglected and changed into a synthetic one, although there are companies that still blends their products with natural ones, most of them mix it with synthetic ones because the production cost is cheaper and they can still sell it at the same high price. You should be aware that you should read the label before buying anything especially perfume, since most of the ingredients may contain carcinogens that can lead to certain types of cancer.
