Ear mites are commonly found in many animals, especially which stray on streets. These mites can also attack your pets and gives a lot of discomfort like excessive shaking of the head, itching and formation of excess wax in the ear canal.
If you have multiple pets at home, you need to be very careful of these mites as they spread very easily between animals. Hence, you need to treat all the pets in your home at the same time to prevent the spreading of the infection.
Ear mites are generally found in the ears of the pets, but they can be present in any part of the body while they transmit between animals. Ear mites are commonly found to infect puppies than well-grown dogs.
If you observe that the dog is excessively scratching their ears, examine the ear canal and you may find reddish black discharge on the ears. Crusts may have been formed due to the clotting of blood. In case this is the first time that your dog has been infected and you want to confirm about the ear mites infection, contact your veterinarian immediately.
Experienced pet owners can treat the animals on their own by purchasing the prescribed over-the-counter medications. The first step in treating ear mites is to clean the ear thoroughly with cotton. This would help you to remove the eggs that have been formed.
If you observe hard crusty layer formation in their ear, coat the inside of the ear with mineral oil using a small dropper. It is better to heat the oil to lukewarm state before applying. Leave it until the waxy formation softens. Clean the ear thoroughly with cotton. Apply the medication as prescribed by your veterinarian. You can also follow the directions of use which is specified in the product.
The treatment of ear mites would take around 4 weeks depending on the severity of the infection. If there are a lot of eggs that are present in the ears and it is difficult to remove, the infection continues to prevail for quite some time until the mites are completely eliminated at all stages of formation and growth. You can give your pet mild flea baths to ward away further infection of the skin. Aggressive medication may be required for some stubborn infections.
Ear mites generally result in the inflammation of the ear and cause a lot of discomfort for the pet. The pet remains restless and also displays an irritated attitude. If treatment is not immediate, the ear mite infection can lead to other secondary bacterial infections like yeast infection. Excessive scratching of ears creates a wound which gives an opening for the bacteria to enter the pet and start infecting.
In addition to keeping the ears clean during the infection, you need to treat the tail and feet also because the ear mite can start spreading throughout the body. Tick shampoos containing ivermectin or pyrethrin as active ingredients helps in preventing the spread of infection. Though ear mites can spread between pets and other animals, it is generally not transmitted to humans.
