It is a common sight to see adults biting their nails whenever they are stressed or simply out of habit. When we are growing up, we are often advised that biting nails is a bad habit and we should avoid it at all costs. However, adult nail biting is very much a reality and though many of us try to get rid of the habit, it somehow never leaves us. If you are one of those who bite their nails, you should keep in mind some tips to overcome the habit. Usually, nail biting is caused by anxiety, stress or boredom. The underlying reason for biting nails is either having lots of activity in the brain or too little activity. You should concentrate on keeping yourself occupied to such an extent that you have enough work on your hands but not more and not less.
There are side effects of nail biting. You can contract skin infections as the skin around the nails is peeled off because of your habit. You damage your nails as well in the process. For women who pride themselves on their well manicured nails, this habit can be irritating to say the least. Nail biting is often called an unnoticed habit as it happens because of subconscious signals and is an involuntary activity. The habit can be embarrassing for those of you who tend to bite their nails in important meetings or on dinner dates. This can set off the other person to wonder whether you have really grown up. So, it becomes more than important to check this habit.
There are many people who suggest of applying creams, bad tasting lotions like pepper spray and the like to the nails to stop one from biting the nails. These are all effective solutions only if you have the will and energy to cure yourself of this habit. The main issue with applying creams and bitter lotions to your nails is that you may end up rubbing them into your eyes. This would complicate the situation further. So, you should find a lasting solution to the issue of biting your nails. As noted in the first paragraph, most of the time the reason for biting nails is psychological, and hence you should concentrate on this aspect more than anything else to cure yourself of this habit.
For any treatment to be effective, you need to push yourself to implement the cure and then have the motivation to stay the course during the treatment. There are no easy measures and there is some pain that you may have to endure when you want to kick this habit of yours. Keep yourself calm and composed and distress yourself by using a rubber ball to relieve the tension and keep yourself occupied and your attention away from the nails. Leave your nails alone and you would see the results pretty soon. It is up to you and your will power to see you through the process of curing yourself of your nail biting habit.
