Tips for Growing Organic Vegetables
By Jason Ladock | Gardening | Unrated

If you are becoming health conscious, then you probably would have heard a lot about organic foods and most possibly would have switched over to having such food. But, have you ever wondered what is organic gardening and how can you grow organic vegetables. Here are some tips that can help you in understanding how to grow organic vegetables.

Organic gardening basically involves growing of vegetables, fruits, grains, dairy products and poultry without the use of chemicals. Usually conventional farming involves use of fertilizers, pesticides and hormonal injections for raising crops and poultry. However on the other hand, when organic gardening is practiced, there is no use of these chemicals and the soil is fertilized with natural manure and compost.

When you decide to grow vegetables by practicing organic gardening then the first thing that you need to do is plan the area where you intend to grow the vegetables. Decide the size of the area. If you are planning on a vegetable garden that would last all the year around then you need to plan out the space for the same.

The next important thing is preparing the soil. Dig the soil well and mix it over again after adding some natural compost and manure. These work well for the soil and help the vegetables grow well. Leave the soil mixed with the natural fertilizer for 2-3 weeks. In the meanwhile plant the seeds in organic compost and keep watering them regularly. By the time the soil is ready the seedlings would have developed and would be ready for plantation.

When you inspect your plants, it is important that you look out for aphids and other insects that can damage your plants. It is better to keep a look out on weeds also and the moment, you see one, pick it out. Removing the weeds from time to time will help you in preserving the nutrients of the soil. In case of insects you can either remove them manually or make some organic pesticide with kitchen items like chili and garlic. You can also use a soap spray that would keep the insects and the aphids away from the crop.

Preventing weeds is also an important aspect of gardening. It ensures that the soil is not deprived of the nutrients you can hoe between the plant rows at specific intervals of few days. You can also try mulching the soil that will save nutrients and also prevent any loss of nutrients. You can alternatively lay back some plastic or other materials that would keep the weed from growing. This will also retain the moisture of the ground.

Practice crop rotation. The vegetables that have been planted in one area should not be planted in the same area again. Rotate your crops according to the season and in some seasons leave the soil alone after toiling with natural compost and fertilizer to help it regain the nutrients. Practicing organic farming is good for the health of the environment and also for the heath of humans. Follow these simple tips and grow your own organic vegetables.
