The Importance of Quality Ferret Food
By Jason Ladock | Pet Nutrition | Unrated

Ferrets have a short and simple digestive tract, which restricts the amount of food that they eat at one time. They have a habit of eating small frequent meals as compared to animals of their size. But, on the same hand because of their small digestive tract every meal they eat should be of good quality.

Ferrets are carnivorous animals and they require meat in every meal. But, it is equally important to consider that an only meat diet can be harmful for their health and disturb the nutritional balance. Hence, it is important that you provide a balanced meal to your ferrets. They can easily digest simple carbohydrates like starches and sugars. But, digesting complex carbohydrates as those present in vegetables and grains is a problem for them. Now, you can easily find specially formulated ferret food available in the market. These foods are rich in proteins and energy and have low fiber content so that it is easy for the ferret to digest. So, now stop substituting your ferrets with the dog or cat food and get good quality ferret food from the market.

Ferrets cannot get adjusted to frequent fluctuations in foods. Once they are attached to a food formula and a food of the favorite flavor, then it is difficult for them to adjust to any other food item. Select a good quality brand ferret food. These have been scientifically designed with the original formula containing brown rice, chicken, dried eggs and many more ingredients. If you are getting pellets for your ferret, then make sure that it is protected from moisture.

It is better to buy small packages and store the contents in vacuum containers, so that there is no contact with the moisture. If the pellets are exposed to moisture, they get damp and are likely to get infected with mold growth. This will make it unpalatable and also toxic. When your ferret is on a dry diet, it is important that you have enough supply of water for them. The rough quantity of water required is three times the amount of pellets that they are eating. In summers and warm weathers the ferrets are likely to drink more water.

When you buy food for your ferret, it is important that you read the labels carefully. Look out for the nutritional value and the ingredients. The labels have a list of other animal products like liver, blood meal, fish or eggs. Look for the protein content of the food and read the ingredients that are contributing towards the protein content. Crude fat is another important ingredient and can be contributed from both plant and animal by-products. A complete pellet ferret food should ideally contain 38% proteins and 15%-18% crude fats. This will be responsible for providing the main energy to your pet. Ferrets do not digest fiber well. However, there can be little fiber up to 4% included in the diet of your ferret.

It is important that you choose the best type of ferret food, so that you can help your pet get the best nourishment. Quality food is very important for the health of the ferret and this will serve it with a better and healthy life.
