Having a puppy at home changes everything. You will have new friend to spend time, a friend who is like a family member and will turn around you all the time. Isnt this a wonderful feeling? Everything works fine until the puppy has not peed on your gorgeous carpet. But, if the puppy accidentally pees on your carpet then you will lose your patience as you have to take all pains to get rid of the stain. If the carpet is a pale colored one then you will be even more irritated. To avoid all these pains and to maintain a good relation, you should potty train your puppy right from day one.
This is not an easy task and will be done in one day. It takes days of patience. But, once the puppy gets used to go to potty, it will never stain your carpet.
First thing you have to learn before you potty train your puppy is punctuality. You should take the puppy regularly at a particular time. So that the puppy gets used to it and understands that it has to pee only at that time. Make sure that the timings are not very far apart. If you miss out then get ready to clean the house. Next thing you have to learn is to remain with patience even if the puppy has peed accidentally. If you yell at it, it will get scared and will not even come to you which disrupts the relation and training you have built up so far.
The following are some effective methods to potty train your puppy.
Crate training is an excellent method to potty train a puppy. When you get the puppy home restrict to a small crate for a few days. Let the puppy have its food, water and even to pee in the crate. But after few days, it starts to feel bad to pee at the place where it has its food. Slowly, it will start to go for a corner. At this stage you can introduce a small wall into the crate. It will go behind that wall to pee. Once it is used to do it you can slowly get it out of the crate and introduce it to potty.
Paper training is another method where the puppy will be trained to go only on a paper.
Praise and reward is an effective method that works well with dogs. Every time you feed, take it out of the home and it should pee or potty outside. If it does, praise it with a food of its liking or praise it with good words. If the dog has done accidents at home, use a harsh tone and ask it to not repeat by using a word like no. But, never try to hit the dog out of rage. It may develop violent behavior. However, this method needs continuous attention towards the puppy.
Finally, if you are not able to train your puppy, you can take the help of professional dog trainers to ease your task.
