How to Deal With a Biting Cat
By Jonathan Pitts | Pet Related | Unrated

All cats have a tendency to bite. When you are planning to adopt a cat from an animal shelter they are responsible in telling you if the cat is capable of biting or not. People who are new to cat ownership get scared knowing that the cat has a tendency to hurt his owner, especially those with little children. Cats can actually be tamed to reduce and prevent them from biting. To be able to do this, cat owners must need to understand why cat bites.

Cats have different kinds of bites, there are warning bites, vicious bites, play bites, and love bites. The biggest mistake most cat owner do is by slapping their cat when they bite. This explains it best:

1. Vicious Bites

It is the rarest kind of bite. A well cared and socialized cat is very rare to do vicious bite. They will only bite if there is an extreme situation that might trigger them. When cats are in panic or hurt, it can trigger them from biting even their owner. The lesson is, don’t abuse the cat and you will not be hurt.

2. Warning Bites

These warning bites are given when you are doing something bad that they do not like, and they want to stop you from doing it. Cat sometimes do not want you to touch his belly or pick them up in the neck. Warning bites are sometimes mild, with the cat opening its mouth and just barely touching you and not merely biting you. Stronger bites are sometimes mistaken as real bites but the truth is it is not. Sometimes it only leaves a marked, if the cat really bites you then, you must be bleeding all over. Just take a look at your cat’s fangs and observe how sharp it is and what it can do to you if they really meant to bite you.

3. Play Bites

Play bites can also be strong, especially when you and your cat are carried away with a simple game. In many cases, owners should be blamed for developing that kind of habit in their cat. Owners are the one responsible for their cat to act nicely towards them. Do not train your cat to become aggressive. Do not play rough games together with your cats to avoid biting.

The most important rule is, don’t teach the cat to think that your hands is a toy. If the cat playfully bites your hand do not make it worse by provoking it further, just stop the game and say no. This will send him a message that hand biting is not permitted. Consistency of action is important to train your cat to behave the way you want them to.

4. Love Bites

Loves bite are given when your cat is happy. They just don’t know how to express it in a nice way. Owners misunderstood this kind of bites; they are a result of a sudden mood change of cats especially when they are too happy. These kinds of bites are usually harmless and majority of cat owners don’t mind them.
