How to Make a Social Security Disability Claim
By Stan Tian | Social Welfare | Unrated

Gaining social security disability benefits is a long, slow and difficult process. For many individuals making a claim their attempts are denied, even if the benefits are desperately needed and an appeal in necessary. We've compiled some tips and information on how to have a successful appeal and gain social security disability benefits where they are needed most.

In order to appeal for social security disability benefit you first have to have a claim denied. If you haven't claimed yet then there is a chance you will be accepted straight away, but there are a few things you should make sure you do and don't do so that you are successful. Firstly, you should be complying with all the requirements and doing all you can to gain social security disability benefits. This involves visiting your doctor and taking prescribed medications (or at least trying them) and going back if they do not work. This is more important for some individual (such as those with epilepsy) but all applicants should be following their doctor's advice. You should then keep an up to date record of all treatment, whether that is medication of therapy sessions to hand over as a report for the social security disability officers to assess. You may then be asked to have a medical assessment to go with your claim and not attending can be very harmful to your end result.

Once you have sent the social security disability claim don't simply sit back and wait until someone contacts you. It is possible to check the status of your claim via telephone and when the status changes you should take the appropriate action. Of course, not knowing what the appropriate action might be is a common problem, and one that many individuals come unstuck on and simply give up. You should not simply assume that you can't afford to hire an lawyer as there are many in each state who specialize in social security disability claims. What's more, they also work on a no-win-no-fee basis, i.e. you only pay them once the appeal has been made and won.

Be aware of the deadlines and cut off dates for handing things in. If you miss the date for filing your appeal then you could be made to wait several months before being able to try again. If you don't know where your social security disability claim hearing is going to commence then look it up days or even weeks in advance and organize how you will get there. Also, make sure you arrive early; having to wait around for 20 minutes is far better than arriving late and having the hearing adjourned until 6 months later.

Making a claim on social security disability benefits doesn't have to be a hard and difficult slog if you do it right. Try contacting your local authority for guidance or hire a disability lawyer from the very beginning to make sure you are always at an advantage. If you are turned down then keep your chin up and remember that many people who apply are unsuccessful the first time around.
