Free Radicals and Oxidative Stress

Oxidative stress is a result of production of free radicals at a rate that is far high from the rate the body is able to detoxify them. In a healthy body, this condition is eliminated by the action of enzymes that control the production of free radicals by destructing the toxic waste materials. However, certain degree of oxidative stress is useful for the body. This helps to slow the aging process. Some of the benefits associated with reactive oxygen is their role in immune system to fight against the pathogens and are also used in cell signaling process, an important process that maintains co-ordination between various activities of cells.

Severe oxidative stress is proven to be dangerous and may even lead to cell death. In worst conditions it leads to necrosis, the complete damage of a tissue. If the situation continues for a very long time, then the effect will be seen on the most important part of life like in the DNA which result in its destruction or may sometimes leads to mutations which are sometimes expressed in a harmful manner. Severe oxidative stress may result in chronic fatigue and may even lead to cardiac arrest.

Another serious side effect of oxidative stress is that in some cases these free radicals serve as triggers for life threatening diseases such as cancer and certain autoimmune diseases.

Some degree of free radicals is produced in a healthy body as a result of metabolic activities such as oxidative phosphorylation. Thanks to the Mother Nature which has included enzymes such as glutathione reductase that act to remove the free radicals and help to maintain homeostasis. But, the extent of free radical production is high in chain smokers, alcoholics and those who have drugs.

If you wish to live long with a good health, it is essential to quit the habits that increase the production of free radicals. Even if you do not smoke, it is essential to keep yourself away from the smokers to avoid exposure to the harmful tobacco smoke. Other factors to be considered include having fresh fruits and vegetables that are rich in antioxidants. It is essential to mainly have foods that are rich sources of vitamins E and C that serve as natural and powerful antioxidants. However, they are washed thoroughly to eliminate the external layer of pesticides that coat them. Pesticides too contribute to the production of free radicals hence, it essential to avoid their intake through fruits and vegetables. Avoid consuming excess amount of sugary foods as they result in greater production of free radicals.

Another important factor that helps to protect you from the effects of oxidative stress is regular practice of exercises. Regular practice of exercise helps to get rid of a great degree of toxins through sweat.

Apart from the above said life style changes, it is essential that you protect yourself from harmful effects of ionizing radiations such as UV rays or x-rays that increase the free radical production.

If you feel that your daily intake of nutrient and well balanced diet is not meeting the demand of antioxidants, you can have antioxidant tablets or vitamin E and vitamin C tablets. However, take the advice of a physician before you start using them.
