Parrots have always been able to maintain a favorite spot amongst pet owners. Most people may already know that parrots spend a large portion of their lifetime simply seeking food.
As an omnivores creature they feed themselves with fruits, vegetables, nuts, worms and insects. As a matter of fact, seeds are a primary source of nutrients for them.
Do not fall under the temptation of feeding the parrot with avocado or chocolate. Also, refrain from feeding them with too much salt, sugar, caffeine, fat and other junk food items.
Let’s have a look at the best source of parrot food.
Seeds
Seeds provide parrots with vital nutrients. While making a choice, select good quality seeds as seeds will have a major share of its staple diet. Although seeds fill up the nutrients gap, they are very high in fat contents, which is why pet owners should not over feed their parrots with seeds. The high fat contents in seeds can pose several health problems to your pet. As long as you do not over feed your parrot with seeds, one can safely include them in their pet’s diet.
Pellets
Another nutritious food item forming an essential part of parrot food is pellets. Pellets are rich source of vitamins and minerals, which will help your pet lead a longer and healthy life. Also, in comparison to seeds they are very low in fat content. The market is flooded with pellets. Make sure to choose pellets that are fresh, and which contains minimum additives in them. Pellets are readily available online or one can visit a nearby store to obtain them.
Vegetables
Almost everyone knows the huge store of benefits human beings derive from vegetables. Likewise, parrots benefit a lot as well from vegetable intake. They are high in all nutrients and vitamins, and at the same time they are low in fat content. Make sure that you feed your pet with fresh vegetables, as unlike other species, parrots are demanding when it comes to fresh food items. Most importantly, fresh food is good for their overall health as well.
Fruits
Fresh fruits can have a place in their diet as well. You can feed them with banana or an orange slice. The only thing you need to consider over here is that you need not feed them with fruits on daily basis. Also, fruits are not as high in vitamin contents in comparison to vegetables, which is why vegetables are always preferred over fruits.
Grains
It’s easier to feed your parrot with grains and seeds in comparison to other food items. There are several varieties of grains to choose from. Simply ensure that the quality of grains you opt for is good.
Simple changes in the diet go a long way in maintaining good health of your parrot. There are over 300 species of parrots found across the world. Most of these species do not know what food is best suited for them so it’s your responsibility to feed them with the right food.
