How to Tell If Your Cat Is Pregnant
By Jason Ladock | Pets Health | Unrated

Watching your pet give birth would be gratifying moment for most pet owners. Apparently, your cat wouldn’t need your help during this phase of her life. However, your presence would be appreciated. If you own a cat, it’s important for you to know about the signs of cat pregnancy.

Pregnancy in cats prevails for a period of two months. One will start noticing the symptoms after 2 to 3 weeks of the pregnancy stage. It would be nearly next to impossible to identify the pregnancy in the first two weeks as most of the symptoms won’t be visible, and the cat will also behave normally during this period.

Let’s have a look at the symptoms of cat pregnancy.

Weight Gain

Weight gain is a common feature amongst cats during pregnancy. Weight gain is apparent especially after the first month when you will notice your cat demanding more food than usual. The weight gain and excess food intake prevails until birth. Instead of overfeeding her, feed her with high quality nutritious food. If you know how to prepare homemade cat food, then prefer them to canned food items purchased from the stores.

Vomiting

Vomiting, especially in the morning is a common symptom amongst pregnant cats. Vomiting can occur from the first month itself.

Enlarged Nipples

This is perhaps the first visible symptom you will notice with your pregnant cat. Nipples look enlarged and pink in color. After a month and a half the size of the nipples will grow drastically as they will be filled with milk.

Change in Appetite

Apart from increased carving for food, there will be a change in appetite amongst cats during the pregnancy phase. It’s important for pet owners to feed their cats with nutritious food as they need to take care of two lives.

Look Out for a Quiet Location

As the delivery period approaches, your cat will seek out a quiet place for herself for the birth to take place. If possible, help her in the process by vacating a small space of your house for her. The place should be immune from loud noise and other distractions.

Changes in Behavior

You will notice that your super active pet is no longer as active as it used to be in the past. It will prefer to lead a sedentary life during this phase. They will refrain from stretching and other similar movements. You will see them spending increased amount of time within the four walls of your house. These signs are common after the first month of the pregnancy stage. Most cats will also try to be attention seekers during the first month of the pregnancy stage. Give her the increased affection and care she is looking for.

Ultrasound procedures can confirm the pregnancy information. However, this test is not required, if your cat displays the above mentioned signs. As a pet owner, make sure that the pregnant cat is looked after very well. This is the phase of her life where she might need your presence even more.
