Cockatiels are an affectionate and joyful bird species. Taming these species can be challenging task in itself. It requires lots of patience and dedication from the pet owner. Inevitable, both the pet as well as the pet owner will benefit from this training. Let’s learn the different ways by which one can train a cockatiel.
Training your cockatiel to avoid screaming
Cockatiel is amongst the nosiest species of animals out there. This personality trait can annoy most pet owners and people in its close proximity. One way of stopping the cockatiel from screaming is to make sure that you do not fulfill its wish whenever its starts screaming. If you do so, then you are inviting a bad habit in your pet. Once you are sure that the bird has adequate supply of food, water, and toys then there is no need to rush to its screaming noise every time it tries to grab your attention. It’s important to avoid its screaming in most cases, in order to get this into the bird’s mind that screaming isn’t the means to fulfill all the demands. Once you are able to control its screaming, you will start loving the bird all the more.
Training to speak
Like parrots, cockatiels have the uncanny ability to speak like human beings. If you are training your cockatiel to speak then you need to consider several factors. First and foremost, start with shorter words, instead of longer ones. If you see your pet not responding to certain words, then understand that it is not interested in that word. You can switch to some other words in that case. It works great if you give them a treat, each time it speaks a word correctly.
Training your cockatiel to avoid biting
Cockatiel biting is the last thing one would want to experience with this lovely creature. Remember, cockatiel considers biting as an affective measure to get things done. For instance, upon biting if you provide it with her desired food, then she knows that she has to do the same the next time as well. To deal with this situation, you will have to ignore her demands, until she realizes that you are the boss.
Praising good behavior
Make it a point to appreciate the birds for its good conduct each time it obeys your order. This will help you build a positive relationship with the bird, and eventually help you tame the bird. Have a training attitude as if you are teaching a small child.
Although, cockatiels are very friendly in nature, training them can be taxing act. Make sure that you do not use force or scream loudly while training the cockatiel. One also needs to be consistent and use proven methods like the ones mentioned above, in order to experience positive results with their training. Decide on a particular schedule and stick to that schedule so that along with you the cockatiel is ready for the training as well. Trained cockatiels can be a great addition in your family.
