Dealing With Obese Cat

Obese cats are nice to hold, but they are certainly not healthy. Just like human beings, there has been a drastic increase in the obesity figures amongst cats as well. Not to forget the fact, that cats are also prone to diseases like diabetes, heart problems etc.

An average cat weighs nearly 8 pounds. Cats weighing around 12 pounds or more are considered obese. Over 40% of the cats are estimated to be overweight.

Obese cats are prone to get affected by lots of health problems. Their cardio vascular system exercises extreme pressure due to the unwanted mass which can even lead to death of your beloved pet.

Obese cats may also experience problems while breathing and they are 4 times more prone to becoming a diabetic in comparison to cats with normal weight. There is also increased pressure on the bones and joints leading to arthritis in some cases. Further, it can cause lameness due to the problem of arthritis.

Fat layers in the cat’s body can affect some of their vital body organs. Fat deposits can harm their lungs and heart. It can also lead to constipation, and other intestine related problems.

Hepatic lipidosis is another life threatening disease which obese cats can encounter. Reductions in appetite, lack of interest in physical activities are some of the most common symptoms dog owners will experience with their obese pet.

Lastly, obese cats have a shorter lifespan in comparison to the cats with normal body weight. Overweight cats die due to several or certain ailments associated with obesity.

The health problems associated with obesity are huge. One always runs the risk of losing your beloved pet very early. Prevention is considered as the best measure when it comes to dealing with obesity. There are several measures which cat owners can incorporate to ensure that their pets stay away from obesity. Let’ have a look at them.

-Feed your pet with less food at a fixed time, instead if feeding it very often without considering the time of the hour.

-Feed them with protein rich food items which have low carbohydrate content.

-Indulge them in playful physical activities. Take them for a walk every day.

-Consult the veterinarian and incorporate a weight loss regime for the cat, if required.

When your cat is following a diet plan, weigh it regularly to notice the changes. This will help you gauge whether the diet you have in place for your pet is working positively or not. You certainly will not want to worsen the situation by feeding them with incorrect food items.

Pets primarily rely on their owners for food and other necessities. It eventually guns down to the fact on how and what you feed your pets, in order to keep it healthy and disease free.

Remember, feeding your cat endlessly may seem like a kindness act, but this kindness may invite several ailments with it. One certainly wouldn’t want to pay such a high cost for their kindness and affection.
