Nasal Cancer in Cats
By Jonathan Pitts | Pets Health | Unrated

Cats can also suffer from nasal cancer. This type of cancer is typical known as feline nasal cancer. It is a kind of disease that affects the frontal sinuses, nasal cavity, and paranasal sinuses of the cats. Normally, this type of cancer starts at the nasal cavity and eventually metastasizes to the frontal down to the paranasal sinuses. This is most common in dogs, but still it is very dangerous for cats. Nasal tumors in cat are generally malignant. Young cats and middle aged cats are the one who is typically affected by this condition.

One of the major causes of this type of cancer is inflammation in the mucous membrane to the lining of the nose. It can trigger the growth of the cancer cell into the nasal cavity. A cat with nasal cancer may show no evidence at all for four to five years. These will only shows sign when the cancer is already in a serious condition. When this happen, it can endanger the life of the cat and the survival rate is very low. Visible symptoms are frequent sneezing and nasal discharge.

To be able to accurately diagnose this condition, you need to seek help with an experience veterinarian. The veterinarian will conduct some physical examination to be able to know if there is some tumor in the nasal cavity. The veterinarian will then ask for a complete blood count and other diagnostic test to make a precise diagnosis. Sometimes, X-ray is done to confirm if the cancer cells are already spreading into the lungs. Tumor is subjected into a biopsy and other imaging device to look further into the nasal cavity.

Most nasal tumor that is detected is either carcinoma or lymphoma. When lymphoma is detected it is usually treated with chemotherapy or a combination with radiation. Surgery is not an effective solution for carcinoma. In this type of cancer, radiation is the best way to fight cancer cells. Nasal cancer in cats is a serious condition. It is a life threatening situation just like in humans. The recovery for this condition is poor even if it still in stage one. The stage does not matter in this condition. In most cases, radiation therapy may help in prolonging the life of the cat thus, improving the quality of life. Some pet guardians in this kind of situation consider euthanasia to prevent their poor cat from suffering.

Genetics is the number one cause of having this kind of disease. To prevent this from happening in your pet, you have to assure the best possible health you can give to your pets. Vaccination may also prevent this condition like the FeLV and FIV vaccines. If you are a chain smoker, do not let your cat smell the entire carcinogen that comes from your cigarette. Second hand smoking is very dangerous not only to animals but as well as to humans. Give your cat an AAFCO, this is the most commercially approve food for cats. Cats also need daily exercise and a clean water to drink.
