Watching your fish grow is a true bliss. But, seeing the fish suffer from fin rot can be quite sad. Fin rot is one of the most common diseases observed among the aquarium fish. This however is easily treatable and can also be prevented. If the fin rot is left untreated it can result in death of the fish. The fin rot is usually a result of a bacterial infection and at times it can start after an injury to the tail of the fish.
The symptoms of fin rot include:
• The edges of the fin turn white.
• The fins start fraying.
• The base of the fin enflames.
• In severe cases the entire fin might rot.
The fin starts fraying and get ragged over time. They start becoming shorter and the edges might even start developing a fuzzy growth because of a secondary infection. As the disease advances patches start appearing and it seems like the fin has been eaten away.
The treatment of the fin rot can be divided into a few steps. The first is to determine the cause of the infection. The water of the aquarium should be changed immediately and antibiotic treatment should be started. Furthermore, little amount of salt should also be added to the aquarium water. The most common cause that fin rot appears is because of the poor quality of water. There will be some reason that the fish gets stressed. This can happen because of overcrowding of the aquarium or feeding the fish with outdated food or just because you overfeed them.
Treatment starts with changing the water of the aquarium and assessing the conditions of the aquarium. If you find food debris, then you should immediately clean the gravel and remove the waste. Look for the expiry date of the fish food. Usually the vitamin content is lost soon so get fresh food in small quantities.
The pH and the temperature of the water also have great impact on the health of the fish. Low water temperatures can trigger fin rot in fish with long fins. The wrong pH can also have an effect on the health of the fin. It is important to use antibiotics that will cure the disease itself. Using an antibiotic that is effective against gram-negative organisms like chloramphenicol, tetracycline or oxytetracycline can treat the disease. Also, the use of aquarium salt will benefit the live bearing fish.
The best way to treat fin rot is to prevent any such condition from being developed. There are quite a few precautions that you can take to prevent fish fin rot. Start by maintaining a clean aquarium with good quality of water. Also, you need to maintain proper parameters for water. Feed the fish in small quantities and store the fish food in a vacuum container so that it does not get exposed much to the environment. Following these small steps can keep the fish from suffering from fin rot and have a better quality of life.
