Freshwater Aquarium Maintenance
By Mark Perry | Pet Related | Unrated

Maintaining a freshwater aquarium might seem to be an easy task. But, it is easier said than done. There are a lot of cleaning tasks associated with the freshwater aquarium like changing the water, filter and cleaning the gravels. It is important to pay attention to aquarium as it involves more than just taking care. People who buy and maintain an aquarium for the first time get a huge lot of fish and toss them all into the aquarium without realizing that they are overloading the tank.

The maintenance of a proper nitrogen cycle in a freshwater aquarium is important. If there are excess fish in the tank the ammonia produced in the tank would be more than the ammonia eating bacteria. This can cause a risk to the life of the fish because of the excess ammonia. The point is to have a balance of ammonia in the freshwater fish tank. This can be done by testing the water with the help of special kits or test strips.

The water in the tank should be changed frequently at regular periods. This can remove the wastes and prevent any kind of mineral build-up in the tank. Changing the water can be done by siphoning out the entire water and replacing it with clean fresh water. Replacing a fifth to a third of the water fortnightly should be sufficient to maintain a healthy environment for the fresh water fish. However, if you have less fish in the tank, then you can carry out this process less frequently.

When changing the water, it is important to note that all the water should not be changed at one time. This can also be a reason for stress for the fish, as adapting to new water every time is strenuous. Replacing all the water would also result in reducing the healthy bacteria from the tank. It is best to have a good filter for the tank, which would be appropriate to the size of the tank. Get a larger tank; it is easy to maintain a big tank as compared to a smaller one, as it maintains stable environment. Also, try not to overload your fish tank.

Fish are just like any other pets and you need to take care of them on a daily basis. Though their requirements are different, it is still important that you constantly keep a check on them. Feed the fish only with the amount that you know will be eaten immediately. Check the temperature; the temperatures keep changing frequently so check it once in the morning and once in the evening. Check the equipments whether they are working properly or not. Look out for the behavior of the fish and their skin to check any signs of diseases. Check out for the appearance of the water and for any odor.

Maintaining a freshwater aquarium is easy if you follow the steps mentioned above. Always keep a watch on the fish and the environment of the tank to make sure that your fish are living a healthy life.
