Fibromyalgia Pain 101

Fibromyalgia is a syndrome that is illustrated with different symptoms. The most dominant symptom however is pain. There are over 3.5 million people that suffer from fibromyalgia and go through a lot of pain throughout their muscles. Through recent researches we have come to know a lot about the fibromyalgia pain and how can the pain be treated.

The fibromyalgia syndrome is widely accepted as a type of arthritis. But, unlike arthritis that usually affects the joints, fibromyalgia is found to affect the muscles. The pain associated with the syndrome is widespread and can occur at anytime in any of the muscles. The fibromyalgia pain affects the ligaments, skeletal muscles and the tendons of the body. The pain can also be felt around the sacs of the joints that are responsible for the lubrication and providing nutrition to the joint. At times, the pain can be localized, but usually it is experienced in all the four quadrants of the body.

The fibromyalgia patients also suffer from pain in the tender points of the body. It is said that to be diagnosed with fibromyalgia you should feel pain at least 11 to 18 tender points of the body. Usually, patients tend to feel pain in the neck, shoulder, lower back, waist, buttocks, ribs and knees. The degree of pain varies according to the severity of the syndrome. There are some people who suffer only from mild pain and are able to continue with their normal life whereas others experience severe pain. The pain is deep and persistent but for some people it might be throbbing, shooting or stabbing pain. The pain can often leave a burning feeling right under the skin. Often, the pain increases with the day and is sent o spread to other parts of the body also.

It has been seen that people suffering from fibromyalgia have a lower threshold of pain as compared to normal people. A small touch can result in a sharp agonizing pain. It is also seen that people with fibromyalgia also remember the pain for a long time even after the event. The low threshold of pain tolerance is caused of miscommunication in the brain. For people suffering from the syndrome they experience a change once the signal reaches the base of the spinal cord. This is where the pain is magnified resulting in extreme chronic pain.

The pain associated with fibromyalgia keeps coming and going and keeps changing in intensity. There are a number of factors that can make the fibromyalgia pain worse. Some of these include fatigue, exercise, hormonal fluctuations, poor nutrition, and change in weather, stress and depression. It has been observed that more than 75 percent of people suffering from fibromyalgia also suffer from temporomandibular joint pain too. Besides, there are some who might also suffer from myofascial pain syndrome. It is advised that patients of fibromyalgia should follow the treatment prescribed by their doctor and have regular follow-ups to know about their condition.
