Sinus cavities are the bones of the skull and the air spaces found above, behind and below the eyes. These help the sound resonate and act as the sound box. These areas are lined with the mucous membrane similar to the nasal cavity and any infection caused in the nose or the throat can easily spread to the sinuses. A case of acute sinusitis is very painful and need immediate care and treatment. Chronic sinusitis can be linked to any type of allergic reaction like hay fever.
There are a number of home remedies for sinusitis. Some of these options are mentioned below:
The inhalations are the best way in which the membrane can be treated. Taking inhalations would loosen the mucus and help you fight the infection. You can choose from oils of Chamomile, Lavender, Eucalyptus, Pine, Peppermint, Tea Tree or Thyme. A combination of more than one of these is also a good way to treat the infection. In acute sinusitis you can take inhalations 4 times in a day to get relief from the pain and congestion. As the symptoms ease you can move to once in a day inhalation.
There are also internal herbal infusions that can be taken to reduce the inflammation. Some of these herbs include:
• Catmint: This reduces the inflammations and thins the mucus.
• Elderflower: This reduces the inflammation and also improves the circulation through the area of the sinus. It helps clear the long-term catarrh and also helps ease the congestion.
• Golden Seal: This has an astringent effect and helps in cooling and toning of the membranes that are inflamed. You can get this herb in the form of tablet. Take a 500 mg tablet a day, as the herb is very expensive.
You can also have a lot of garlic, either raw or in the form of garlic capsules. This helps fight a lot of infections. The garlic paste can also be used for inhalation, this helps in thinning the mucus and easing the congestion.
Take 2 fresh nettle tops and 1 tablespoon blackberry leaves. Mix this with 1 sprig of fresh peppermint and 1 head of meadowsweet. Add all these herbs into 600 ml of boiling water and cover it. Inhale the mix and use it in springtime before the summers.
Ginger juice when taken internally is very effective for the treatment of viral infections. You can take a couple of teaspoons of ginger juice every day until the sinusitis subsides. Soak fenugreek seeds and then boil the mixture. Drinking this decoction is found to be effective in treating sinusitis. Take a handful of mustard seeds and boil them in a cup of water on low heat. Cool the mix and then strain the liquid to store it in a dropper. You can use this solution as nasal drops to loosen the thick mucus and also to fight the infection. Inhaling the cumin seeds also alleviates the symptoms of sinusitis. Make a paste of cinnamon powder with water and apply the mixture around the nose and the head.
