Atrial Fibrillation

Atrial fibrillation is a condition that is characterized by improper functioning of the atria, the two upper chambers of the heart. In a normal healthy functioning heart, the ventricles which are the lower two chambers of the heart receive blood from atria and circulate it throughout the body. For the ventricles to receive the blood appropriately from the atria they should have a very good co-ordination between them. This co-ordination is achieved with the help of a signal generated by the sinoatrial node that directs the atria to contract. So, what happens in case of atrial fibrillation? In case of atrial fibrillation, the signal does not reach the atria appropriately and hence they fibrillate and they keep shaking. As a result of lack of co-ordination the ventricles cannot receive the blood from atria.

Though it sounds as a serious problem it can be tackled easily by the means of taking appropriate measures. If the problem is not obstructing the daily routine then you can forget about it. In case of serious cases, the problem can be corrected by means of catheters. In more severe cases where control is not gained with the help of catheters and those with history of heart diseases, heart surgery is recommended. It is a very simple surgery with about 80 to 100 percent of success rate.

Apart from knowing what is meant by atrial fibrillation, it is essential to know the measures that help to gain control over the problem. First thing you have to remember is for you to not neglect the symptoms such as difficulty of breathing and heavy chest region. It is essential to seek medical advice immediately. If the symptoms are mild you can take control of them by taking certain care. Studies have shown that potassium is essential for healthy functioning of the heart. Hence, it is essential to consume potassium rich foods. But, the recent trend is towards consuming processed foods that are rich in sodium. Sodium reduces the potassium levels keeping the health of your heart at risk. Thus, make sure that the food you consume is balanced with potassium and sodium. Apart from the potassium and sodium, make sure that the diet is well balanced with all essential nutrients. This avoids the need to use synthetic supplements that show side effects in some individuals.

Never overload your stomach with food. It is quite common that you get overwhelmed at the sight of delicious foods. But, you have to control your cravings and stop having food when your stomach orders you so. It is also essential to avoid late dinners and allow some time for the food to digest before you go to bed after having dinner. It is recommended to have the dinner in the evening at around 6’0 clock. Never lie down in abnormal positions or uncomfortable positions. Make sure that your head remains at an angle. So, use a pillow accordingly. This helps you to breathe freely.

To avoid serious complications, it is essential to have a regular check-up especially if you have other health problems such as diabetes and hypertension which increase the risk of atrial fibrillation. With the help of all the above suggestions you can very easily deal with the problem of atrial fibrillation.
